Finely bound, by Ramage of London, in beautiful early full green morocco Art Nouveau leather binding. The spine with two raised bands, each with a gilt ruled line across the band. Lettered and…decorated with gilt dots and inlaid dark green and plum morocco leather floral designs within gilt lines. Elaborate floral centre design to both boards with gilt tooling around dark green and plum leather inlays. Gilt ruled borders. Board edges with partial ruled gilt lines. Turn-ins with decorative gilt borders. Centre panels of tan morocco with burgundy and dark blue inlaid floral designs with gilt lines, and decorative gilt borders. Ivory moire silk endpapers. All edges gilt. Neat, and short, 3 line inscription, dated 1908, to the front blank free endpaper. Some very light spotting to the first few leaves otherwise clean and bright throughout. A Little fading to the spine and minor bumping to the corners but still a beautiful book, showing Ramage at his very best.

Gilt wheel, corner pieces and borders to upper cover, with corner pieces, boarders and the initial O.V.W to lower cover. Five raised bands to spine, the compartments lettered and decorated gilt. Watered silk d…oublures, decorated crescent moon and border gilt turn-ins, signed by Ramage to front turn-in. A near fine copy. Light spots to the upper cover, covers very slightly bowed, spine slightly sunned, small marks and four small pin holes to silk, corner repairs to front endpaper. Gift inscription to front silk doublure, 'Oliver. V. Watney from Herbert Watney, Nov 1902.' Inscribed further on front endpaper.

A light mark to the top outer corner of the rear silk endpaper. Neat school prize label, from St. George's school Harpenden and dated 1913, to the front blank free endpaper and gilt coat of arms stamp to the front inner board but otherwise the pages are clean and bright throughout. A beautiful copy.

Red marble endpapers with decorative gilt in…ner dentelles with a floral and vine pattern. Binding by J. Ramage & co. with binding stamp on version of free endpaper. All edges of the text block gilt, interior bright and clean with in-text illustrations, headpieces, and tailpieces throughout. A Fine copy overall. A delightful collection that mixes prose and poetry inspired by the 19th century interest in revival texts and Scottish history. Aytoun's Lays, first published 1849, were modelled on the works of Macaulay and Scott (ODNB). The Paton Edition is prized for its expressive illustrations, which embrace a medieval-revival style to emphasize historic costume and create a sense of drama. The London-based bindery, John Ramage and Company helped "restore the fine hand-craft of bookbinding, in an era when that process was increasingly mechanized" (Morgan Library). John Ramage (18361911) apprenticed with both English and French binders before buying his first binder business in Edinburgh 1860. He opened a London bindery three years later (Gertz). "Though the range of their designs is broad, Ramage bindings are celebrated for their remarkably delicate, careful, and elaborate gilt work" (Gertz). Fine.
