Hardback. Condition: New. William Nicholson was still in his twenties when he started working on books for the publisher William Heinemann that combined a hugely powerful woodcut style with peerlessly precise observation and sly humour. An Alphabet brings together a collection of portraits, from A is an Artist to Z is a Zoologis…t whose liveliness is only increased by the calligraphic vigour of Nicholson's print style. A great classic of British book illustration, unavailable for decades. Published simultaneously with two other works The Square Book of Animals and The Book of Blokes.

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Limited Edition. 'This edition of 300 copies, of which numbers 1-150 accompany the portfolios of plates. Printing completed March 1978. This is copy no: 252.' 252 is written in. Below it is the signature of Edward Craig. So this is Not accompanied by the portfolio of plates. It will be the Only…signed copy for sale on the Internet. There is a List of Plates in Portfolio on the page following the signed limitation page. There are 11 numbered pages and 16 in total. The book was 'set in Caslon type and printed at Whittington Court on Rives mould-made paper by John & Rosalind Randle and Miriam Macgregor, and bound by Pat Hicks at the Whittington Press.' The paper is nicely thick. It is in excellent shape, nicely bright and free of any soiling. There's no creasing. No markings. And with the exception of Mr. Craig's signature, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The pages are deckled or rough-cut. You can see the mustard-colored covers in the photos. They are very clean. There is a small crease at the front top right corner and rear bottom corner, also a little nick at the top edge of the front near the spine (no tear), and a light crease off the top edge of the front and rear cover. The black lettering on the front is very bright. The book is very solidly bound (there is a gold twine between page four and five which tells you how it's bound). Included with the book is a separate four page glossy prospectus with nine photographs. Edward Craig is the son of Edward Gordon Craig who learned to carve wood under the tutelage of William Nicholson and James Pryde. Edward Gordon Craig was also 'an English modernist theatre practitioner, an actor, a director and a scenic designer, as well as the author of an influential body of theoretical writings. The Gordon Craig Theatre, built in Stevenage (the town of his birth), was named in his honour in 1975. Edward Gordon Craig was the ' illegitimate' son of the architect Edward Godwin and the actress Ellen Terry.'. Signed by Author(s).

Add to basketFIRST EDITION. DELUXE LIMITED EDITION [50 copies - or less]*. Original cream cloth cloth portfolio (47.5 x 39 cm.), renewed silk ties, internal brown paper flaps carefully restored, contained in a modern half black morocco solander box, with blind stamped borders and gilt lettered label to spine. 26 full page hand-coloured woodb…locks (25 x 20 cm.), each signed by the artist (except "H" which is present but not signed) including the two plates "E for Executioner" and "T for Topers" which were suppressed for the trade editions, all loose as issued mounted on card (43 x 35.5 cm.). All the prints clean and bright with just minor toning at the extremities of the card mounts. *Colin Campbell (William Nicholson The Graphic Work, 1992) notes that the size of this edition was not formally announced by Heinemann, whose advertisements merely stated that a few copies were available. However, in a letter to Haldane Macfall dated December 20, 1897, William Heinemann says "we guarantee that only fifty of these [hand-coloured sets] are printed". In fact this may well be an exaggeration since in a letter dated 17 January 1956 from A.S. Frere (then Chairman of Heinemann) to Stanley Scott he states that "we have been able to find a record which reveals that the total number of the edition recorded as being finished was 30, of which 18 went to Russell, New York, 10 to Heinemann and 2 to Trade". The "Executioner" and "Topers" designs used to illustrate the letters "E" and "T" in this deluxe edition, designed for collectors, were deemed inappropriate for children and so were replaced in the Popular and Library lithographed editions by "Earl" and "Trumpeter". Campbell (25, A).

Add to basketFirst edition. The ''Library Edition'' with the tipped-in colour lithographic title-page and twenty-six plates printed on laid paper and bound in full pictorial oatmeal cloth, all edges gilt. Folio. The Alphabet was also issued in two other versions: a de luxe edition of about 50 copies printed from the blocks and coloured by ha…nd; a popular edition with the plates printed on cartridge paper and bound in cloth-backed boards. This is the first of the five picture books that Nicholson published with Heinemann. The first image, ''A was an Artist'', is a self portrait, while the second, ''B for Beggar'', is a portrait of James Pryde with whom Nicholson developed a striking poster style under the name the Beggarstaff Brothers. Two of the plates differ from those in the de luxe edition, as it was thought that ''E is for Executioner'' and ''T is for Toper'' might not be suitable for younger eyes; here they have become ''E is for Earl'' and ''T for Trumpeter''.Covers rubbed at the corners. Spine tanned and scuffed, heavily in places. Very good. The plates are fine.
