Quarto (11 5/8 x 9 inches; 295 x 230 mm). xv, [3], 363, [7, blank] pp. Twenty-six plates by Matisse, consisting of six etchings, printed by hand, and twenty lithographic drawings, made as studies for the etchings, printed on thin colored papers. Original full brown buckram, embossed in gilt on front board and spine from a design by LeRoy H. Appleton. Top edge speckled, bottom edge uncut. Spine gilt just a bit darkened. Front inner with hair splint but firm. Small bookseller stickers on front and rear endpapers. With the publisher's original printed slipcase. Slipcase with some minor wear along edges. Still, a near fine copy. "One of the very few American livres de peintres issued before World War II. According to George Macy, who undertook this only American publication of Matisse's illustrations, he asked the artist how many etchings the latter could provide for five thousand dollars. The artist chose to take six subjects from Homer's Odyssey. The preparatory drawings reproduced with the soft-ground etchings (Matisse's only use of this medium) record the evolution of the figures from vigorous sketches to closely knit, if less spontaneous, compositions." (The Artist and the Book). ?The text of Ulysses is printed in double columns throughout; the running title and pagination are printed in brown. The six etchings by Henri Matisse with their accompanying sketches on yellow and blue paper depict the Calypso, Aeolus, Cyclops, Nausicaa, Circe, and Ithaca episodes. These six etchings were issued separately by the Print Club, New York, 1935, in an edition of 150 copies. Subscribers paid an affordable m…onthly price for editions de luxe of literary classics illustrated and signed by notable artists, often designed by Macy, in a limitation of 1500 copies. At the time the idea was groundbreaking and surprisingly well-received, and Macy displayed an unflagging all-American spirit of purpose driven by risk-taking that would keep his publishing passion afloat through the Depression and onward. As its centenary approaches, it appears that LECs have also survived the quirks and whims of book collectors, thanks to Macy's unbridled instinct for matching artists with texts. Take for example the strangest marriage of them all, Henri Matisse meets James Joyce's Ulysses, the most valuable blunder in LEC history. An indignant Joyce, finding out that Matisse had never read the book, dropped out of the project at the eleventh hour signing only 250 copies, sparking endless gossip and criticism, and making it the most desirable of any of the LECs. Our copy may not have Joyce's imprimatur, but it is otherwise complete and in spectacular condition, making it a special offering from our Spring acquisitions. Limited to the standard 1500 signed and numbered copies, of which this is number 364, signed by Matisse in pencil on the limitation page--preserved here in incredibly scarce original glassine. [Slocum 22]. Fine in toned and lightly chipped original glassine jacket, in near fine publisher's slipcase. Publisher's brown cloth, decorated in gilt, top edge speckled, in glassine jacket, housed in publisher's plain pale yellow slipcase, spine titled in brown. No. 1142 of 1500 copies; signed by Henri Matisse in pencil and by James Joyce in ink. Very slight tanning of (inner) hinges; but just about a fine copy. The fragile hinges ar…e fine, which is unusual for this book. The publisher's box has a little bit of wear to the fore-edges and extremities, but is clean, tight and strong. Laid in is the publisher's four-page prospectus and postcard announcement for this book, plus an additional postcard announcement of shipment addressed to its first owner, in which the purchaser is informed that she was one of the fortunate Limited Editions Club members who are being shipped a copy signed by both Matisse and Joyce. The postcard goes on to describe how the Club tried to handle the imbalance between the number of members who wanted the Joyce signatures and the number of copies Joyce agreed to sign. We have never seen another copy of this postcard.
