Some soiling to vellum, contents a bit toned and with occasional marginal spotting throughout, generally a very good unsophisticated copy. Extremely rare first French edition of Feynes' account of his voyage to China and the East Indies. Henri de Feynes, Comte de Monsart, was the first Frenchman to explore China. Most probably acting under secret orders from king Henri IV to provide vital intelligence to open up French trade with the Far East, he left France in 1606, travelling overland. Feynes called at Venice, Aleppo where he joined the Baghdad caravan Isfahan, went down to Hormuz and then onto India. Passing through Goa, he embarked for Malacca, then the Moluccas, Macao and finally disembarked in Canton in 1609. There, his account gives his observations of the porcelain and silk trade, cormorant fishing, and his astonishment at the bandaged feet of high-status women. His descriptions of India and the kingdoms of the far East are of particular interest, and, significantly, he notes the Dutch occupation of many East Indian islands. He marvels at the residence of the great Mogul, who was likely Jahangir, Mogul emperor of India. Feynes' account also contains one of the earliest mentions of coffee, which he calls 'cahayette'. He returned to Europe by sea from Goa to Lisbon via Mozambique. Landing at Lisbon, he was arrested as a spy and thrown in prison, and was not released until 1613. First published in English in 1615, both editions are exceptionally rare; this French edition has only sold three times at auction since the Second World war. A substantial portion of the book is dedicated to the Persian Gulf and includes references to "Barin" (Bahrein), "grandement fameux à cause de la pesche a perles" (p.72), and "Mascaty" (Muscat), specifically the Portuguese fort, date cultivation ("la meilleure marchandise qu'ils ayent") (p.77), a lengthy description of the people and their dress, and finally a glowing review of the harbour:"'il n'est point de ports ny plus beaux, ny plus à couvert de tous vents que ceux de Mascaty" (p.78).

In Sharjah, al-Bourini saw the palace of Sheikh Saqr bin Sultan Al Qasimi, and took several photos of Sheikh Saqr and other visiting rulers. The following chapter focuses on Dubai, with mentions of Deira, the influence of Iranians in the local economy, pearling, and the presence of the only hospital in the coastal emirates. As for Abu Dhabi, "there are no schools nor hospitals there", but the British have a military base and rely on the powers of the brother of the ruling Sheikh to further their interests. Al-Bourini's work is also a treasure trove of information on local festivities, including wedding dances, and traditions, such as iftar at the house of the Sharjah ruler. This broadside presents the far id the system of inheritance prescribed by the Qur an and elaborated over centuries of Islamic jurisprudence in the form of a structured diagram dedicated to Sultan Abdülhamid II, the thirty-fourth ruler of the Ottoman Empire and the last to exercise effective autocratic power over its domains. It was composed on the fifteenth day of Jumada al-Akhir in the year 1300 AH (April 23, 1883) by Kulevi Müftizade and Süleyman Hilmi, the latter holding the rank of Devriyye, a position in the Ottoman religious-scholarly hierarchy authorising him to teach and adjudicate at a defined level of the medrese system (something approximating a licensed judge). The broadside presents the far id inheritance system in a structured, diagrammatic form, setting out the prescribed shares of all categories of heirs after burial expenses and debts have been settled. The extensive introductory text opens with a formal dedication to Abdülhamid II and continues with a concise historical survey of Islamic inheritance jurisprudence. The principal diagram sets out the prescribed shares of all categories of heirs: daughters, widows, mothers, and collateral relatives. Shares are calculated after the deceased's burial expenses and outstanding debts have been settled. The system turns on a fundamental distinction between quota-heirs (dhaw al-far id), those entitled to fixed fractional portions of the estate (one-half, one-third, one-sixth, and so on), and residuary heirs ( asaba), who receive whatever remains after the fixed shares have been distributed. Four male quota-heirs are identified (husband, father, paternal grandfather, and maternal brother), and eight females: wife, daughter, granddaughter, mother, grandmother, full sister, paternal sister, and maternal sister. Depending on the configuration of surviving relatives, certain heirs may shift between the quota and residuary categories. The chart concludes with the extended family group (dhaw al-arh m), who inherit only in the absence of both quota-heirs and residuaries. The far id system is among the most precisely codified elements of classical Islamic jurisprudence, and its Qur anic basis has given it a sanctity and stability that have resisted modification over fourteen centuries. One of its notable features, frequently observed by both Muslim jurists and later Western commentators, is its explicit guarantee of inheritance rights to women at a time when most legal systems afforded them none. Daughters receive half the share of sons; widows and mothers receive defined fractions; sisters are specifically enumerated as quota-heirs. The Ayd n vilayet, centered on zmir (Smyrna), was one of the most prosperous and cosmopolitan provinces of the Ottoman Empire a major commercial hub with a mixed population of Muslims, Greeks, Armenians, and Jews, and a well-developed provincial administrative apparatus including its own press. That this Arabic-language inheritance law text was produced there in 1883 reflects the continuing operation of the Sharia court system in provincial Ottoman life, where religious judges required authoritative reference materials for the administration of inheritance cases. Süleyman Hilmi's Devriyye rank placed him within the Ottoman ilmiye hierarchy the class of religious scholars and jurists and his co-authorship of a formally licensed and copyright-protected legal broadside suggests both professional standing and commercial ambition. The copyright notice is itself noteworthy: Ottoman intellectual property protection of this kind, enforced through the author's personal seal, was not unusual by the 1880s, yet it remains a detail that surprises modern readers. The dedication to Abdülhamid II, who had come to power in 1876 and was actively cultivating pan-Islamic sentiment as a tool of political legitimacy, is consistent with the tone of religious-legal publication throughout his reign. The entire Ottoman legal system that this broadside served Sharia courts, far id inheritance rules, the ilmiye hierarchy would be abolished in the reforms of 192426. Composed April 23, 1883 (15 Jumada al-Akhir 1300 AH) by Kulevi Müftizade and Süleyman Hilmi. Printed at the provincial press of the Ayd n vilayet (presumably at Izmir) through the agency of Ziya Efendi, under Board of Education license 674, dated [13]01. This is the first time we have encountered this place of publication. A bookseller's stamp appears at the foot. Copies not bearing the author's personal seal were declared counterfeit at the time of publication. Generally speaking large ephemeral broadsides like this tend to survive in low numbers. More specifically, examples of this broadside were likely discarded when the jurisprudential tradition it represents was abolished between 1924 and 1926, when the new Turkish Republic adopted a modern civil code in its place.

Price" ownership label to front paste-down of both vols. Price was a specialist in German history who worked for the Library of Congress. Minimal light rubbing to binding, contents fresh, overall a particularly clean and well preserved set. Uncommon as a first edition and especially so in such good condition in the original cloth. This travelogue, recounting a journey across the Arabian Peninsula from Riyadh to the Arabian Gulf, was highly esteemed at the time of its publication, though it is now known to contain fictional passages. Disguising himself as a Syrian doctor, Palgrave visited the Rashidi capital Ha'il and Riyadh, capital of the Al Saud. He spent just over fifty days at Riyadh, where he met members of the ruling family and treated a number of Arab patients. Three chapters describe his time there and another provides a history of Wahhabism and the rise of the Al Saud. Palgrave then travelled eastward to the shores of the Arabian Gulf, where he first visited Bahrain, which impressed him with its atmosphere of social and religious tolerance. From Bahrain he sailed for Qatar and importantly gives us probably the best 19th century description of that state. Also of value is the chapter on Oman. Palgrave was well read in Arabic literature and was conversant with Arab customs, as well as being a shrewd observer and an accomplished writer. His book often voices his concerns over the future of Arabia, especially in those passages, of which there are many, that detail the shifting animosities and allegiances between the countries and tribes of the Arabian Peninsula. He was particularly watchful of the advances of the Emirate of Nejd and critical of what he saw as the intolerance and severity of the Wahhabi faith. An accomplished Arab scholar, Palgrave's account of this state is perhaps the best 19th century description available. In 1862 he set off to Arabia on a fact-finding mission for Napoleon III, who sought information on the Arab attitude towards France and on the possibility of obtaining pure Arabian blood-stock for breeding purposes. From Gaza Palgrave travelled across to Jawf, Ha'il, Riyadh, Hufuf and Katif where he embarked for Bahrein where he was impressed by the level of social and religious tolerance, Qatar and thence to Sharjah via the Persian coast. He then zigzagged to Bander Abbas, returning via Sohar and Muscat. The last chapters (XV-XVII, pp.254-289) are devoted to Oman culminating in his final departure towards home from Muscat. Of significant interest is the lengthy chapter on Bahrain and Qatar (pp.198-254).

Several leaves with significant loss to margins sometimes encroaching onto text panel, some occasional damp-staining to central upper portion of the manuscript, colophon nearly detached and with marginal losses, withal a fascinating rather unique manuscript. There is a historical precedent for prisoners in Muslim countries to memorise the Qur'an in order to commute their sentence. It is possible that in this instance a similar incentive was offered in exchange for copying the Qur'an into book form. The quality of the script in this particular manuscript, and perhaps especially the intricate nature of the strap-work motifs in the divisional surah headings, demonstrates a high level of commitment on behalf of the scribe (who names himself in the colophon) to the creation of this manuscript. There are other examples of Qur'ans copied in prison. Perhaps the most famous example of this practice in the west is the "Maltese Qur'an" (MS Codex 1904) housed at the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts at the University of Pennsylvania. This remarkable manuscript was was copied in 1065 AH/1654 CE by Muhuammad al-T z (163167), a Moroccon prince of the Saadi dynasty known in Christian Europe as Baldassarre Loyola Mandes, one of the most famous Christian converts of the seventeenth century in Malta. In several autobiographical passages Baldassarre reports that while he was a prisoner at the Grand Prision, or Bagnio, of Malta, he served as a preacher for the enslaved Muslims in the prison of Malta. To perform this duty, he relentlessly copied a large number of manuscripts for teaching the Qur'an to his coreligionists who had otherwise no access to the sacred text. It is uncommon to find complete manuscript Qur'ans from Morocco as they usually appear in smaller subdivisions, usually into quarters. These cartouches mark the beginning of each of the four parts into which the Qur'an text was divided according to a distinctive textual tradition attested in North Africa. This way of organising the Qur'an responded to a mathematical principle and was aimed at dividing the sacred text into four parts whose lengths would be as uniform as possible. These textual sections, almost quantitatively equivalent in the number of letters, typically coincide with the following groups of surahs: 16, 718, 1937, and 38114. This division into four parts had its origin in the Iberian Peninsula in the eleventh century and then spread through North Africa. The manuscript begins in Surah Al-Baqarah verses 72-73, suggesting that the manuscript, while incomplete, is missing just a few folios from the beginning. La prison de la ville est à deux mètres environ au-dessous du sol, elle est à voûtes soutenues par des piliers et reçoit le jour par de petites ouvertures munies de grillages en fer. Tous les prisonniers ont des fers rivés aux pieds, et quelques-uns une chaîne au cou, mais ils sont libres de se traîner dans toute la prison qui est très vaste, et contient au milieu un reservoir d'eau et une mosquée. Le gouvernement ne fournit aucune nourriture aux prisonniers, qui sont généralement entretenus par leurs parents ou connaissances ; à défaut, ils vivent d'aumônes ou de leur travail, nattes, coussins, petits paniers, quelques-uns meurent de faim. Cette prison contient toujours en Moyenne de 500 à 600 prisonniers. A sa sortie, le prisonnier doit payer 10 onces pour le fer, 2 onces pour le taleb ou écrivain qui rédige l'ordre de sortie, et une sokera (sukhra) au Mekhazni qui l'a conduit en prison et qui, selon l'usage, revient lui-même le délivrer. Mais avant tout il faut acquitter l'amende plus ou moins forte arbitrairement fixée par le caïd et préalablement débattue par les parents ou les amis du prisonnier, qui inissent toujours par obtenir une diminution pour laquelle ledit caïd a eu soin de se tenir en garde en demandant une somme énorme. Enfin, quand l'accord est fait, parent ou amis s'empressent de payer le prix convenu, mais il arrive parfois que le caïd, après l'avoir reçu, en exige encore le double pour relâcher le prisonnier ou qu'il ne le relâche que pour le remettre en prison quelques jours après." Driven by his passion for precious stones, his ventures over a 40-year period contributed immensely to European knowledge of the Orient. The "Six Voyages" documents his forty years of travels between 1638 and 1668, providing exceptionally detailed, historically accurate accounts of the trade routes, commerce, and courts of the Ottoman Empire, Safavid Persia, and the Mughal Empire. His journeys are primarily remembered for his role in facilitating luxury trade and documenting the courts, commerce, and geography of the East. He is most famously associated with acquiring a massive, rough, blue diamond in Indiawhich would later become known as the legendary Hope Diamondwhich he subsequently sold to King Louis XIV.

'Le Bouquet sacré, ou le voyage de la Terre sainte' (The Sacred Bouquet, or…the Voyage to the Holy Land) is a 17th-century devotional travelogue written by Jean Boucher, a French Franciscan Cordelier friar. First published in 1614, the book became a massive success and went through numerous editions and corrections well into the 18th century. In four books Boucher recounts his Mediterranean crossing, his stay in Egypt, and his journey across the desert to the Holy Land. He provides an often original description of Jerusalem and the surrounding areas. The narrative reflects the religious revival of the Counter-Reformation, framing the physical travel as a moral and spiritual quest to stimulate Christian piety. The book also captures the friction of 17th-century Christian-Muslim relations under Ottoman rule, documenting life inside the Franciscan monastery in Jerusalem while also including anti-Islamic discourse and critiques of Protestantism.

He mapped a 600-mile route through the northern and southern Midian recording its ruined ancient cities. For the Khedive in Cairo, he brought back 25 tons of minerals to be assayed. First edition, revised issue with new title and cancels, and the 1818 date, as usual. The Revolt of Islam (1818) is a poem in twelve cantos composed by Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1817. The poem was originally published under the title Laon and Cythna; or, The Revolution of the Golden City: A Vision of the Nineteenth Century by Charles and James Ollier in December 1817. The plot centres on two characters named Laon and Cythna, inhabitants of Argolis under Ottoman rule who initiate a revolution against its despotic ruler. Despite its title, the poem is not focused on Islam as a specific religion, though the general subject of religion is addressed, and the work draws on Orientalist archetypes and themes. The work is a symbolic parable on liberation and revolutionary idealism following the disillusionment of the French Revolution. In 1817 the publishers C. and J. Ollier agreed to publish Shelley's long poem, Laon and Cythna. Shelley's new father-in-law, William Godwin, recommended a master printer for the job, Buchanan Millan, who made minor alterations to the text without consulting the poet. Shelley wrote to the Olliers complaining about these liberties, whereupon the Olliers read the work for the first time and realised what they had agreed to publish. In the original version the titular lovers were brother and sister. London was alive with gossip about Shelley living with both Mary Godwin and her half-sister Claire Clairmont, and in contemporary usage, such a ménage was termed incest (St Clair, p. 432). Shelley therefore made alterations, removing any hint of incest, and gave the book a new title, The Revolt of Islam, by which it is still known. The book is made up from original sheets of Laon and Cythna, with 26 cancelled leaves and a new title leaf. The Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry's Survey of Palestine with the scarce portfolio of 10 folding maps, which are historically significant because they established the primary cartographic record of land boundaries right before the 1948 war. After World War II, the Anglo-American Committee convened to discuss the state of Palestine, then still a British mandate under the post-WWI system, and to evaluate the impact of sanctioning Palestine as a potential destination for the European Jews who had survived the Holocaust and were now classed as refugees. The Inquiry's report included the testimonies of representatives from various communities, and extensive documentation of life in British Mandate Palestine, down to the details of protected exports, living conditions, and legal distinctions made between Arab and Jewish citizens. The recommendations of this Survey were clear and their consequences far-reaching. The Committee recommended that Palestine take in 100,000 Jews, that the White Paper regulations restricting the Jewish purchase of Arab lands be lifted, and that Palestine should be neither a Jewish nor an Arab state. This work sometimes includes a scarce extra volume, not present here, which is labelled "For official use only" and has no price on its wrappers, as it was for internal circulation only and not for sale. The third volume includes details on the identity card system, listings of hospital patients sorted by religious group, "Absorptive capacity and immigration", "Arab land holdings", lists of Palestinian newspapers, principal religious dignitaries, and discusses the involvement of Palestinian citizens in the Armed Forces. This third volume is quite scarce, with only one set of the Survey including it on OCLC.

Remarkably, notwithstanding his formidable official duties, Lyall also established himself as one of Britain's foremost scholars of Eastern languages. At Balliol he had distinguished himself as a student of Hebrew, and from there he moved on to Arabic, Persian, and Hindustani.His translations were particularly successful in combining an accurate rendering with a poetical diction which imitated more or less the metres of the originals, although usually without any attempt at rhyme. The merit of Lyall's literary work was recognized throughout Europe and honorary degrees were conferred upon him by the universities of Oxford, Edinburgh, and Strasbourg. He was elected a fellow of the British Academy and King's College, London, and a vice-president of the Royal Asiatic Society, of which he was a prominent member. He helped found the London School of Oriental Studies and represented the government of India at oriental congresses in Rome (1899), Hamburg (1902), Algiers (1905), and Copenhagen (1908). In the preface Lyall explains: "Little has hitherto been done to make the poetry of Ancient Arabia known to the English reader, and that which has been attempted has followed other methods than those adopted in this collection. In it my endeavour has been, so far as my powers permitted, to render line for line and measure for measure, and to afford in a commentary all the explanation which seemed needful to the understanding of the task". A "vivid account of [the author's] journey from Bahrein to the Wahhabi capital at the end of 1922; his sojourn there for six weeks as the guest of Sultan 'Abdul 'Aziz and his subsequent return to the coast of the Persian Gulf at Kuwat". So Percy Cox summarises the present work in his review published in the Geographical Journal (June, 1928), where he opines that the book is "particularly valuable at the present time.whether Sultan 'Abdul 'Aziz, since recognized by H.M.'s Government as King of the Hejaz and of Nejd, will altogether appreciate the partial lifting of the veil from the recesses of his private life is perhaps doubtful". Cox highlights the fact that "as a Syrian with a perfect command of Arabic, Mr. Rihani was of course equipped as no European traveller could be for gaining intimate touch with the life of the Ruler and his subjects". The author, Ameed Fares Rihani (1876-1940), was a Lebanese born Arab-American who published numerous books in Arabic and English, including the first novel in English by an American entitled The Book of Khalid (1911). In 1922 Rihani travelled throughout Arabia, meeting and getting better acquainted with its rulers. He was the only traveller at that time, European or Arab, to have covered that whole territory in one trip. While on his travels he acquired an invaluable and first-hand account of the character, vision and belief of numerous leaders in the region including Ibn Saud, ruler of the desert kingdom that would soon become the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with whom he became fast friends. Between 1924 and 1932 he wrote and published six books in English and Arabic related to the three trips he made to Arabia. These accounts were a considerable critical and public success. London publishers released a circular on Rihani's travel books as having been best sellers. He is considered by some scholars as a major figure in the intellectual development of Arab nationalism. During the middle period of his literary career he published the present work, Ibn Sa'oud of Arabia. His People and His Land (1928) which Peter Valenti has described as "a long-neglected book.of great utility to anyone interested in Ibn Saud and early twentieth-century Arabia".

Lebanese printing of the famous "Maqamat" ("Assemblies" or "Sessions") of al-Hariri of Basra…(1054-1122): a virtuoso display of Arabic poetry, consisting of fifty anecdotes written in stylised prose which used to be memorised by scholars which, along with Kalila wa-Dimna, Harir is 'the most famous work of prose fiction produced in the Arab world' (Irwin, 186). Abu Muhammad al-Qasim ibn 'Ali al-Hariri (1054-1122) was born in Basra. He was a scholar with private means and he led a quiet life on an estate outside the city. His Maqamat was allegedly written under the patronage of a vizier who served first the 'Abbasid caliph al-Mustarshid and later the Seljuk Sultan al-Mas'ud. However, although Hariri claimed that his book was written at the behest of 'one whose suggestion is a command and whom it is a pleasure to obey', one should bear in mind that this was not an age when writers were supposed to write to please themselves. If they had no patron or potential recipient for what they were about to write, then they invented one. Structurally Hariri's Maqamat consists of fifty maqamas, each notionally set in a different part of the Islamic world. In each of these places Hariri's narrator, al-Harith, encounters the wily old rogue Abu Zayd who is spinning a yarn in order to extract money from the gullible. Abu Zayd, who is often in disguise, is a master of the Arabic language and (in the words of R. A. Nicholson) he offers his bemused listeners 'excellent discourses, edifying sermons, and plaintive lamentations mingled with rollicking ditties and ribald jests'. In the sixth maqama alternate lines are written in letters which have or do not have the dots that define letters of the Arabic alphabet. The sixteenth maqama is devoted to palindromes. The seventeenth is full of riddles. The nineteenth is about the language of food. The twenty-second is a munazara debate on the respective merits of accountants and secretaries. The forty-ninth celebrates the gloriously disreputable life of the Banu Sasan. Only in the fiftieth and final maqama does Abu Zayd repent. "The Maqamat presents a vivid street-level view of the medieval Islamic countries at the height of their power and culture. We meet merchants, clerics, peasants, sultans, and scholars. We get to visit fabled cities of Iraq, Iran, Arabia, Yemen, and other middle eastern locations. Some gentle sunning to spine, an excellent copy overall. 'Une Nuit de Cléopatre' (English: One of Cleopatra's Nights) is a historical short story by the French writer Théophile Gautier, first published as a six-part serial from November 29-December 6 1838 in La Presse. It relates an imagined romantic incident in the life of the Ptolemaic queen of Egypt, Cleopatra VII. The story was translated into English together with other fantastic tales of Gautier by Lafcadio Hearn for the collection 'One of Cleopatra's Nights and Other Fantastic Romances', published by Richard Worthington in 1882.

Arnold Henry Savage Landor (2 June 1865 26 December 1924) was an English painter, explorer, writer, and anthropologist. He can be seen in the accompanying photograph posing rather foppishly with his cats. In 1901 he traveled from Russia to India, riding on horseback through Persia, publishing the account of that journey in the book Across Coveted Lands (1902). These volumes contain a wealth of information on Persia, also Afghanistan and Baluchistan.

Some light rubbing and toning to exterior, cloth spine renewed, contents clean and unmarked, generally a very good copy. The Beharistan (meaning… "Abode of Spring") is a classic of Persian literature written in 1487 by the renowned Sufi poet and scholar Nur ad-Din Abd ar-Rahman Jami (often simply known as Jami, or here, "Jamy"). He was a prominent figure in the Naqshbandi Sufi order and lived most of his life in Herat. A scarce edition. Two copies recorded on OCLC (McGill University, University of Arizona). "This English translation of the masterpiece of Jami is intended as a help both to the student as well as to the general reader. With the exception of certain passages which have been omitted out of decorum, it is a complete translation that has appeared for the first time. Explanatory notes have been added to elucidate obscure passages as well as to explain allusions. A biographical sketch of the Author, notices of Beharistan, etc., are compoiled from various sources, and the Author's and Publishers' thanks are due to those writers. The texts consulted were Lucknow and Cawnpore editions and the Manuscript copy found in the Mulla-Feroz Library of Bombay" (Preface).

Key developments driving Omani oil news in 1978 included: The Dhofar Exploration Boom: Following the resolution of regional instability in southern Oman, the late 1970s marked an aggressive expansion of exploration. This led to the rapid development of the crucial Marmul, Birba, and Qaharir oilfields, adding 70,000 barrels per day to national output. Nationalisation & Control: By 1978, the Omani government had successfully solidified its 60% majority ownership stake in Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), partnering with foreign entities like Shell (34%), Total (4%), and Partex (2%). Original navy blue cloth, printed paper label (worn) to spine, many leaves uncut, text in the original Arabic text alongside Flügel's academic Latin translation. Additional decorative engraved title printed in purple marking this out as a… subscriber's copy. This copy was printed for John Francis Davis. Sir John Francis Davis (17951890) was a prominent British diplomat, sinologist, and the second Governor of Hong Kong. Associated with the Royal Asiatic Society, he notably translated classical Chinese works for the Oriental Translation Fund. His key translations include "The Fortunate Union" (1829) and "The Sorrows of Han" (1829), Some rubbing and light dampstaning to cloth, minimal loss of cloth to corners, light toning and light occasional scattered spotting throughout, a very good unsophisticated copy overall. The "Lexicon Bibliographicum et Encyclopaedicum" is a monumental multi-volume reference work edited and translated into Latin by the German orientalist Gustav Lebrecht Flügel, with its first volume published in 1835. It is a translated edition of "Kashf al-Zunun 'an Asami al-Kutub wa-al-Funun" (The Revelation of Doubts of the Names of Books and Arts), which was originally compiled in Arabic during the 17th century by the famous Ottoman polymath, bibliographer, and geographer Kâtip Çelebi (also known as Haji Khalfa). The work serves as a massive bibliographical encyclopedia of Islamic literature and scholarship, cataloguing thousands of books and sciences across the Islamic world. The multi-volume project was sponsored and printed under the auspices of the Oriental Translation Fund, a committee established in 1828 by the Royal Asiatic Society. The fund aimed to make influential Eastern historical, scientific, and literary texts accessible to European scholars. The final volume was published in 1858.

Provenance: Old ownership inscription of H.G. Bell to flyleaf (possibly a relation of Gertrude?).… Extremities of spine lightly rubbed, front inner hinge partially cracked, a few stamps throughout (Durrants School Library), generally a very good copy. An interesting work on Syrian ways of life by a woman traveller. Ada Goodrich-Freer (1857-1931 moved to Jerusalem in 1901 after being exposed as a fake psychic and lived in the region with her husband Dr Hans Henry Spoer for twenty years. She travelled across eastern Arabia and Syria publishing several works on her travels. In this particular work she focusses on the cultural aspects of the people she encountered including whole chapters on children, bread and coffee, the Harem, property laws, camels, locusts, and several on the plants of the area.

An excellent copy. Jerusalem, Bethany, and Bethlehem is a classic work of travel literature written by Josias Leslie Porter and first published in 1887. Porter (18231889), a Scottish minister and traveller who lived in Damascus and authored several standard guides to the Holy Land, here provides a rich historical and biblical account of these three sacred cities based on his many years of residence in Palestine.
