Add to basketThe first appearance of Lancelot's complete description of the Bayeux Tapestry. Quarto. Bound in contemporary calf, all edges red. Six folding plates reproducing the Bayeux Tapestry by Simmoneau. A good copy, the binding worn and exposed. Antoine Lancelot played a major role in bringing the Bayeux Tapestry to the attention of th…e public. In 1724 he read a paper to the French Royal Academy on the Foucault drawings of the Tapestry, and on 9th May 1730, he gave the paper published here, giving a full description of it. It is titled Suite De L'Explication D'Un Monument De Guillaume Le Conquerant, and was accompanied by six intaglio folding plates by Simmoneau. These plates reproduce the second part of the Bayeux Tapestry, and complete the full pictorial reproduction of the Tapestry that began with the publication of his first paper in 1729. Brown 4.
