Taschenbuch. Condition: Gut. 17... 750 S. Ein Klassiker: W.S. Burroughs. B525-59 9783861500216 Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 460.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First Thus. First printing of this new edition, with extended appendices containing the "Ugh" correspondence. Foreword to the new edition by John Calder. The book was originally published in hardback in the UK by John Calder in 1964, and in paperback by Corgi Books in 1968.… ***Very good in printed card covers. The covers show some rubbing and marks commensurate with age and handling. Light vertical reading crease to the spine. Spine tight. Corners slightly rubbed. Covers bright. Red lettering faded to yellow on the spine. Internally also very good with a previous owner's ink name on the front free endpaper. No serious creases or tears. Paper stock tanned. ***198mm x 127mm. 309 pages. ***'Since its first appearance in Paris in 1959, William Burroughs' "The Naked Lunch" has achieved the status, not only of a modern classic, but as one of the most important contemporary works of literature, a watershed like "The Castle", "Ulysses" and "Molloy", that cannot be ignored although it may, in some quarters, continue to offend and attract hostile criticism. In the twenty-three years since "The Naked Lunch" first appeared in book form, many other novels, film scripts, critical and didactic writings by William Burroughs have been published, but "The Naked Lunch" remains his best-known work. The Paris edition was first reviewed in the Times Literary Supplement together with "Dead Fingers Talk", an expurgated amalgam of three Burroughs novels. The all-out TLS attack was followed by fourteen weeks of impassioned correspondence, which is reproduced here for the first time as an appendix. Apart from its value as a revealing and amusing slice of literary history, it in many ways is a useful guide to many aspects of this important novel.' (Quote taken from the back cover) ***A nice clean copy of the first printing of this new paperback edition of this iconic cult title. Uncommon. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Naked Lunch is a 1959 novel by American Beat generation writer William S. Burroughs. The novel does not follow a clear linear plot, but is instead structured as a series of non-chro…nological "routines".The novel was highly controversial for its depictions of drug use, sadomasochism, and body horror, including a famous description of a man's talking anus taking over his body. The book was considered obscene by the US Post Office, the state of Massachusetts, and the city of Los Angeles, each leading to separate legal challenges.

Add to basket8vo. 88 pages. Printed wrappers. Containing chapter two of 'Naked Lunch.' This was the second appearance of any section of the novel in print, following the Spring issue of the journal. For those keeping track, the headline above the text contains the misprint "William C. Burroughs." "The 1958 appearance of a Naked Lunch excerpt… in the Chicago Review created a scandal that ended in the resignation of the magazine's two editors, Irving Rosenthal and Paul Carroll. The controversy was initiated when an editorial review by Chicago Daily News columnist Jack Mabley, appeared under the title 'Filthy Writing on the Midway.' Mabley objected to what he called "'obscene' writing in the University of Chicago's literary magazine. Published alongside Burroughs in the Chicago Review were Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and other young and unconventional writers of the period" (Columbia University exhibition). Rosenthal went on to write one of the great (woefully unheralded) novels of the era, 'Sheeper,' in which Burroughs and the Beats appear. Some light wear and toning at extremities, a few spots on cover, but a very good copy.

Second appearance of material from Naked Lunch prior to the book's publication, the first chapter having appeared in the Review's Spring 1958 issue. The Winter 1959 issue containing a third installment had already gone to press when a front-page Chicago Daily News editorial titled "Filthy Writing on the Midway" led the University Chancellor to order the editors to remove any potentially scandalous or obscene material. Within days all but one editor resigned, with Editor Irving Rosenthal and Poetry Editor Paul Carroll publishing the issue's intended contents in their new magazine Big Table with First Issue's subtitle: "The Complete Contents of the Suppressed Winter 1959 Chicago Review."
