This volume contains eighty model sermons, gathered and arranged by Bartholomaeus de Ursinis (or de filiis Ursi, as his name appears at the end of his preface), a Franciscan from the province of Terra di Lavoro between Rome and Naples; this is the only work associated with him to appear in print. Bartholomaeus's preface, addressed to his fellow friar Caspar de Pergula, explains that these sermons all issue from God and the Holy Spirit, and that he, Bartholomaeus, is just the instrument through which their inspiration passes. Previously attributed to Sixtus Riessinger, the prototypographer of Naples, and dated to 1473 on the basis of the date given in the preface, this edition is in fact one of the first works published by the printer Francesco del Tuppo (1443c.1501), who had worked with Riessinger before establishing his own press in 1478; he went on to be the most prolific printer in fifteenth-century Naples, continuing to print until 1498. The prefatory letter by del Tuppo on [a]6v (in some copies blank) is addressed to Ferdinand of Aragon, King of Naples, and explains that the royal counsellor Bernardino Geraldini of Amelia financed this and six other works from del Tuppo; Geraldini's brother Angelo, a senior figure in the Papal Curia, was at this time Bishop of Terra di Lavoro. Plausibly bound by Hobson's 'Florentine Palmette and Cornucopia' shop, which made similar bindings with numerous concentric panels of multiple blind fillets and with grounds of a repeated small x stamp, on books printed between 1483 and 1514. Similar flower-shaped catchplates are found on a 1491 Venice Boethius attributed to this shop (Hobson, fig.96) and on a 1481 edition of Dante bound in Florence (De Marinis 1093). The illumination of the first leaf of text, however, is most likely Neapolitan, although the armorial in the lower border was added soon after, possibly at the time the volume was bound in Florence. ISTC records four copies in the US (BYU, Harvard, Huntington, Walters), two in the UK (BL, Rylands). We have not been able to locate another complete copy offered at auction. The rubrication is particularly helpful in the first two quires, where the summaries of the topics within the sermons have been linked with red lines to make them easier to read. The annotations include manicules and short notes, though a few pages (c1vc2r, n4r, y7v) contain longer and more detailed comments, many of which (beginning 'non') seem to disagree with the text.There are two variants of this printing recorded; this is the variant with the marginal letters printed in quire a, and the word 'cunctis' (not 'multis') in the colophon (identified as issue BZ in the literature).The fighting cocks, dragon, and fleur-de-lys tools on the binding are illustrated in Foot, figs.13.2 number 3 (p.152), 13.4 number 3 (p.154), and 13.6 number 1 (p.157); they are all found together on a Netherlandish binding with early Brussels provenance (British Library IB.49502). The close connection between Johannes de Westfalia in Louvain (the printer of the other text originally bound in this volume; see provenance below) and the Oxford book trade in the early 1480s led to the imitation of Netherlandish book stamps like these in Oxford bindings by the Rood and Hunt binder, as described by Foot. Provenance: 1. The Premonstratensian abbey of Berne, in the diocese of Utrecht, founded in 1134 (and still active today). Their library was sold at auction on 13 December 1887: Catalogue d'une précieuse bibliothèque provenant d'une ancienne Abbaye (Leiden, J.W.van Leeuwen, 1887). This book was lot 120, where it was bound with Thomas de Chabham, Liber poenitentialis (Louvain, Johannes de Westfalia, c.14831485) in a contemporary stamped calf binding. The abbey was plundered and burned during the Eighty Years' War, its goods confiscated at the end of the Thirty Years' War, followed by several more forced moves. Since 1857 its home has been in Heeswijk, near s'Hertogenbosch. 2. John Vertue (18261900), appointed the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Portsmouth in 1882. The text, compiled by the Augustinian canon Hieronymus de Villa Vitis, of Rebdorf in Upper Bavaria, outlines prayers and readings for each day of the liturgical year the 'daily bread' of the title. The pioneering and prolific Hagenau printer Heinrich Gran (d.c.1527) primarily issued theological works sermon collections, treatises on liturgy, pastoral theology, morality, and church history and writings of the Church Fathers and medieval theologians. From 1497 he worked closely as here with the important Augsburg publisher-bookseller Johann Rynmann (d.1522), 'one of the most significant booksellers, perhaps the most significant, from the turn of the fifteenth century' (Deutsche Biographie, trans.). Provenance: From the Benedictine abbey of Tegernsee in Bavaria. The handsome decorative initials are the work of Paulus Wigg, whose name appears in several places along with the date 1521, and who has added several annotations. The final blank has five lines of prognostics: if the weather is clear on StPaul's day, then profit will be abundant; if it is cloudy, then animals will die; snow or rain promise costly times ahead; and wind means war; while if the sun shines on the feast of StVincent, then there will be wine. A liturgical note describing local practice at Tegernsee appears on c3v. Remarkably, another copy of this same work (complete with the calendar to part II) at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich (Res/4 Asc.466 m) was likewise bound at Tegernsee Abbey and rubricated by Paulus Wigg, bearing his name beneath the colophon and the date 1524. Several manuscripts by Wigg also survive, e.g.Beinecke MS 28 (a collection of prayers) and BSB Clm 19201 (a Psalter). Binding: The binding, with different decoration to the front and rear boards, was executed at Tegernsee Abbey. Several of the tools are identified on the Einbanddatenbank as belonging to Tegernsee, e.g.circular stamps with 'IHS' (s011177) and entwined heart-shaped flowers (s011175), and a rosette (s011178). The manuscript slips employed as spine liners have distinctive v-shaped ends, like those in the Munich copy, apparently a quirk of local practice. They are here taken from a near contemporary liturgical manuscript elegantly written in red and black. Adams H547 (part II); USTC 682476; VD16 H 3478.

Gaguin (14331501) was general of the Trinitarian Order and a diplomat in the service of LouisXI and CharlesVIII; his chronological history of the French kings, from the origins of the French state under Clovis, was first published in Latin as Compendium de origine et gestis Francorum in late 1495, just as CharlesVIII began his military campaign in Italy. Gaguin added the text about LouisXII before his death, then his work was translated into French by Nicolas de La Chesnaye, and continued up to the reign of FrançoisI by Pierre Desray. Editions in French began to appear in 1518. The text is weighted towards the Hundred Years' War and the Italian Wars, as befitting the original author's personal knowledge, and proved to be a significant source for these events for both historians and novelists. One later episode mentioned by Desray involved 'sept hommes saulvagues' from a new land, named as Oran in Algeria but in fact North America; the source used by Desray talks of Oran and the seven men separately, which Desray has conflated. The title as it appears here was first used in 1518, though the text was also adapted for the book entitled Les grands chroniques (Bechtel G-1). This seems to be an unrecorded issue with Galiot du Pré's name in the imprint; other booksellers involved in the edition were Jean Frellon, Ambroise Girault, François Regnault, and Gilles de Gourmont. There was also a 1530 edition by Philippe le Noir, though with changes to the text. We have located only two copies of any issue in the US (Harvard and Pennsylvania) and two in the UK (NLW, Rylands). The text contains meditations on Psalms 44 and 118 by the Jesuit general Claudio Acquaviva (15431615), who was responsible for the great expansion of the Jesuit order and its educational activities of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. He died in January 1615, and this volume contains a preface by his successor Muzio Vitelleschi dated December of the same year, commemorating Acquaviva's contribution to the Order. Another edition was printed in Cologne, also in 1616, with a different preface addressed to Ferdinand, Archbishop of Cologne. This volume was most likely bound by the workshop of Baldassarre Soresini, which Foot refers to as the Borghese Master. The Soresini family of binders were active in Rome from the late sixteenth century until the mid-seventeenth century. They produced numerous volumes for the Borghese family; an elaborate binding in red morocco made for PaulV is illustrated in Legature papali, item 171, on a 1613 imprint, and bears the same winged cherub's head and dolphin-headed swirl tools. The same winged cherub's head, cardinal's hat, and eagle are illustrated in plateI of Legatura romana barocca 15651700; items 18 and 37 show two other bindings made for Scipione, one of which also has just three rows of pendant tassels on the binding (a cardinal usually has four rows). Provenance: Bound for Scipione Borghese (15771633), the papal nephew appointed a cardinal as soon as his uncle was elected Pope as PaulV in 1605. Scipione amassed a fortune from his privileged position, as well as perhaps the best art collection of the time, much of which survives today at the Villa Borghese in Rome. His library was sold in 1829 with the rest of the family library, though this volume has not been identified in the sale catalogue. USTC 4022227; not in BM STC Italian. The engravings, by Dorgez (fl.17801814), depict, inter alia, a putto revealing a man in bed with a lover, whilst his enraged wife approaches with baton in hand; the legs of a woman and her lover sticking out from a door as her husband, blindfolded, takes part in a game of Blind Man's Buff; a woman extending a makeshift ladder made of bedsheets from her balcony watching in horror as the ladder tears and her lover is thrown to the ground; and a disgruntled husband, in his nightclothes, emptying a chamber pot onto the head of his wife's lover, who is scaling a ladder to her window on the level below. Alongside a calendar with liturgical, astronomical, and court events marked, as well as Oxford and Cambridge term dates and notable anniversaries is a table of kings' and queens' reigns from 1066, a list of London's Lord Mayors and Sheriffs since 1764, information on holidays and coins' weights, and a four-page illustration of the riverfront façade of Somerset Place, which would be completed in 1786. A single annotation, in French, records the birth of the owner's daughter: 'on the 23rd of this month my daughter Elisabet Ann was born' (trans.). As well as a list of public libraries and their opening hours, the present almanack features a list of deceased and newly elected members of the Academie Française, natural disasters, home remedies for gout and warts, and a list of curious events from the previous year, e.g. a woman returning to work six days after giving birth to triplets, quadruplets born in the fourth month of pregnancy, a monstrous fish caught off the Adriatic, and the discovery of an ancient walled city at the foothills of the Alps. Both the emblematic visual representation and mottoes used in the binding appear, for example, in Daniel de la Feuille's 1691 Devises et emblemes anciennes et modernes, the motto 'Ni le bruit, ni l'éclat' ('Neque lux, neque rumor', or 'nor light nor noise') symbolised by a putto with a flaming torch (in this case a smoking candle), and 'Bruler et se taire' ('Silens ardere', or 'to burn and be silent'), a symbol of secret, burning desire illustrated by a putto holding aloft a flaming heart. The Parisian almanacks Étrennes mignonnes, published with an engraved title until 1750, appeared from 1725 to 1848, first published by Jouënne and later Lambert or Durand (as here); Guillot from 1787, and finally by Demoraine in the nineteenth century. Prominent among the school of legal humanists, Cujas gained a Europe-wide reputation for his work on Roman law, and on Justinian in particular. As a teacher at the universities of Valence and Bourges, he attracted outstanding pupils from all over Europe, including Joseph Justus Scaliger and Jacques Auguste de Thou. The commentaries gathered here were, according to the preface, dictated in Bourges a few years before Cujas's death, and cover the second and fourth books of GregoryIX's Decretals. There is much on marriage and related subjects, including adultery, divorce, incest, polygamy, betrothal, wives and husbands, and children. Other topics covered include war, judges and witnesses, oaths and evidence, monks and popes, the laity, and leprosy. The few marginalia demonstrate a contemporary reader's interest in confessing to a crime, and witnesses. Three copies on Library Hub (Edinburgh, RCP, TCD); two copies traced in the US (Emory, LoC). A collection of verses in English, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Welsh, etc., it was published by Oxford University to commemorate the death of GeorgeII and the accession of GeorgeIII, and includes contributions by Benjamin Kennicott (in Hebrew) and the Poet Laureate Thomas Warton (in English). Collections of commemorative poetry, often polyglot as a demonstration of academic prowess, were published by Oxford University from the early seventeenth to the mid-eighteenth centuries (the last in 1763). 'The chief reason for such printing was the free distribution of presentation copies. These were bound at the university's expense in varying degrees of sumptuousness, chosen to reflect the status of the recipients only a few copies were bound in the very finest materials, typically two in velvet (for the king and, probably, either the prince or queen), and six in satin (probably for the Chancellor and other leading courtiers)' (Money). Money's selections from the University accounts include (for the year Nov.1761 to Nov.1762) payments of £80 7s to Thompson for binding 'Verses on the Marriage of the King' (i.e.Epithalamia Oxoniensis 1761), and of £24 4s 6d to Turner for velvet and gold fringing indicative of the great expense of such materials. It was almost certainly the university binder Alexander Thompson and the Oxford mercer John Turner who were also responsible for the materials and binding here, but there are no clues as to the intended recipient. While earlier monarchs favoured red velvet, purple was the colour of choice for the Hanoverians; at his state funeral the purple silk-lined coffin of GeorgeII, draped with a purple velvet pall, processed under a canopy of purple velvet. GeorgeIII in turn exchanged his red velvet coronation robe for a purple velvet Robe of Estate on his departure from Westminster Abbey. The quarto and folio editions of 1769, of which this was the first to be finished, were printed from the same setting of type differently disposed; most of the folios were destroyed in a fire at the Bible Warehouse in London. This copy is distinguished by its extraordinary binding, an extremely elaborate example of English rococo work, of which there were a small number of practitioners in the 1760s and '70s. For similar examples see Maggs catalogue 1075, items 177 and 185 (sharing four figure tools with ours, the other tools generically similar but different), and Henry Davis GiftII, 185, one of a set of prayer books bound for the Earl of Chesterfield c.1776 (sharing two figure tools and possibly one of the rococo arc tools). Here the proliferation of tools employed far exceeds all the above examples (we can count no fewer than thirty-five tools on the covers alone, several of which we can find no comparables for), but the execution is slightly haphazard the chosen sheet of leather, for example, was insufficient for both covers and the spine, and was made up on the rear with a 23 cm-wide strip along the fore-edge. The daughter of Victor AmadeusII, King of Sardinia and his favourite mistress, Jeanne Baptiste d'Albert de Luynes, Maria Vittoria Francesca was later legitimised by her father and married to prince Victor Amadeus of Savoy-Carignan. Oppressed by the debts racked up by her husband, the couple escaped to Paris in 1718, taking up residence at the Hôtel de Soissons, which they soon turned into one of the most notorious gambling houses in the French capital. The couple led a scandalous lifestyle, with Maria Vittoria forging close relationships with various powerful men, particularly Cardinal Fleury and Louis Henri, Duke of Bourbon, reporting intelligence to her father while her husband continued to amass large debts. Following the death of her husband in 1740, Maria Vittoria led a quieter and more retiring widowhood and succeeded in marrying off her only surviving daughter, Princess Anna Teresa of Savoy-Carignan, to the widowed Charles de Rohan, Prince of Soubise, one of the most celebrated French book collectors of his time. Even before Louis XIV moved the Court from the Louvre to Versailles in 1682, the Louvre had long been a hub of artistic, creative, and intellectual energy in Paris; the first printing workshop had appeared in the Louvre in the 1620s, and the Imprimerie Royale was established there in 1640 by Cardinal Richelieu. Artists and artisans of all trades from watchmakers to history painters were given lodgings and studio space in the same wings and corridors that accommodated cultural organs like the Menus Plaisirs du Roi (responsible for state festivities and spectacles), the royal printing press, and the royal academies (Painting and Sculpture, Architecture, Inscriptions, Science, and the Académie Française). As the palace expanded over the next two centuries, the Louvre complex (the building and surrounding streets) came to be dominated by this growing community of artists, artisans, men of letters, and their aristocratic patrons, living and working together. The principal work of the great ascetical writer Thomas à Kempis (c.13801471) and perhaps the best-known spiritual manual, the Imitation of Christ here appears in the recension of the Jesuit Heribert Rosweyde (15691629) and is followed by Rosweyde's life of à Kempis. Frederick Keppel (17281777), son of Willem van Keppel, second Earl of Albermarle, brother of General George Keppel, third Earl, and of Admiral Augustus Keppel, first Viscount Keppel, and illegitimate great-grandson of Charles II. Active in Madrid in the first decades of the nineteenth century, Eugenio Hurtado was a music professor, choirbook calligrapher, and seller of brushes and inks, based at 29 Calle de San Roque (Gaceta de Madrid 65, 30 May 1818, p.540). He received several commissions from the Royal Court, particularly for the Infante Antonio Pascual of Spain (17551817), the younger brother of Charles IV of Spain and Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies. He won a silver medal at the Spanish exhibition of 1828 for his stencil templates ('chapas caladas'), as used here, with 'alphabets, vignettes, fleurons, friezes, and other ornaments' (Memoria de la Junta de Calificacion de los productos de la industria española 1830, p.59). Several examples of his work are preserved in the Real Biblioteca in Madrid. The present manuscript is remarkable both for its enormous size and for the attempts by the binder to accommodate this, most strikingly the incorporation of wheels. Another notable feature of the binding is brass plates affixed to the tail-edge to support the bookblock, as it is too heavy to be kept from collapsing by rounding and backing alone.

The simple vellum binding has been very curiously tooled, most likely by an early owner rather than a professional binder. Although imitating typical finishing with armorial blocks and tooled (or possibly plaquetted) borders, the board's design has been executed with a single heated point, applied with varying pressure and in places flicked or dragged across the surface of the vellum. It is tempting to link the monogrammed 'LM' on the board with the inscription of 'Lemaistre', but the owner and the corresponding arms have not been firmly identified. The text, a popular biography of William de Croÿ, sieur de Chièvres (14581521) first printed in Paris in 1684, examines his influence as chief tutor to CharlesV as a model of the education of princes. Its author, Antoine Varillas (c.16241696), served briefly as historian to Gaston d'Orléans and made an unsuccessful foray into bibliography under Colbert; he found greater success with published writings, most notably his history of France. The passages for dictation are largely geograph…ical, including descriptions of German and Italian cities and states and of other European and Mediterranean nations and regions, as well as more general discussions on topographic features (borders, mountains, seas and islands, rivers, and lakes) and on populations, religion, commerce and trade, climate and fertility, and natural resources both mineral and vegetable. The books are fittingly (if unusually) decorated with engraved illustrations relating to travel and exploration, one with images of Ferdinand Philippe d'Orléans' campaign in Algeria, another showing a 'Chinese punishment' and a hunting scene, and the two volumes belonging to Georg Christoph Lauterbach with scenes from Gumal und Lina, a children's story set in Africa. In the margins are occasional marks, some dated, with the teacher's feedback. Curiously, the teacher does not remark on Georg Christoph's consistent misspelling of his hometown, Lenk, as 'Benk'. The text is divided into five books. The first describes the duties of the confraternity's officers, including the readers of the martyrology, choristers, and superintendent of the dead. The second comprises a collection of general rules, covering, for example, genuflexion, the use of candles, readings, reciting litanies, relics, Masses, spiritual exercises, attending the sick, and so on. The third and fourth books deal with the confraternity's oratory and church: the celebration of various offices and feasts, the profession of novices, discipline, displaying the Eucharist and the blood of St Francis etc. The final book is devoted to processions to different churches on particular days and during jubilees, and accompanying the dead for burial. Only one copy traced in the UK (Lambeth Palace), and four in the US (Illinois, Notre Dame, Saint Bonaventure, UCLA).

His first wife was Henrietta of England, sister of King CharlesII, although he preferred male lovers, notably the Chevalier de Lorraine. These fragments are of uncut sheets from the 1766 Amsterdam edition of volumeII of the famous Mémoires of Armand de Mormès de Saint-Hilaire (16511740), the noted French general. The concertinaed sides are from a manuscript legal document on vellum, also of the eighteenth century.

It was based on the Poetae Graeci Principes of 1566, which Estienne had edited and translated as well as printed, and he introduced not only corrections but also additions: the figure poems of Simmias of Rhodes ('Egg', 'Wings', 'Axe'), Estienne's Propertius 11.12, and his literary examination of Virgil's and Ovid's imitations of Theocritus. 'This tiny edition is the only book which issued from the press of Henri Estienne in 1579: he spent most of the year in Paris, following his trouble with the Geneva Council over the publication of his Deux Dialogues' (Schreiber). It is found here with Henri Estienne's 1575 edition of the Psalms, with Buchanan's paraphrase (carried out whilst Buchanan was imprisoned for heresy in Portugal) and highly praised by Henri. 'The best-known work associated with his period of detention was his Latin version of the Psalms which he may have planned earlier as it was a genre which attracted contemporary French writers. Dedicated to Mary, queen of Scots, when published, it is the work which does most to justify Henri Estienne's description of Buchanan as easily the leading poet of his time. His principal characteristics as a poet may be described as mastery of the Latin language and variety of subject matter' (ODNB). Provenance:1. The two works are bound in a remarkable presentation binding lettered 'Steph. Moz.' and 'H.Stephani. Do.'; a gift from Henri Estienne to Stephan (or Estienne) Moser, who is recorded as a canon of Sion in the Valais from 1562 to 1580 (Martone, Die Domherren von Sitten 10432013, no.599). His heir later inscribed the front free endpaper 'D.Moezer' in 1634. 2. The Benedictine monastery of Sankt Stephan in Würzburg had its own bindery, active between around 1485 and 1516 (the monastery was dissolved c.1803). The elegant printing, with the text of the Psalter in a distinctive large font to allow space for Bruno's extensive commentary alongside it, is ascribed to Georg Reyser, who was the printer for the diocese of Würzburg from 1479; he also produced liturgies for the use of Würzburg, almanacks, and other official publications. The bishop of Würzburg at this time was Rudolf von Scherenberg, a long-term incumbent of the episcopal throne, from 1466 until his death in 1495; he was an active administrator who consolidated the finances of the diocese and, in particular, sought to standardise the liturgy. This commentary is attributed to Bruno of Würzburg (c.10051045), a Franconian nobleman appointed as bishop in 1034; it is an assembly of extracts from commentaries written by the Church Fathers as well as Bede, and in particular by Cassiodorus. In common with other eleventh-century commentaries on the Psalms, it contains anti-Semitic interpretations of numerous passages, which were subsequently used to inflame anti-Jewish feeling; in 1488 Rudolf expelled the Jews from his diocese.Provenance: 1. Frederic Perkins (17801860) of Chipstead Place, Kent, brother of the bibliophile and brewer Henry Perkins (whose collection included two Gutenberg bibles and several books printed on vellum). Although dating from the height of concealed fore-edge paintings' Edwards-influenced fashionability, the present example belongs to the older and rarer tradition of heraldic fore-edges as a mark of ownership, rather than picturesque or Romantic scenes. Unlike later examples, it is executed in pen, ink, and coloured wash, and is visible with only a slight fanning of the edges, allowing the reader to see the arms and therefore recognise the book's owner whenever it is opened. The arms and corresponding inscription belong to Horatio Walpole (17231809), Baron Walpole of Walterton (from 1757) and Walpole of Walpole (from 1797), before his creation as Earl of Orford in 1806. His own career in politics is perhaps overshadowed by his uncle Robert Walpole (16761745), the first Prime Minister, his first cousin Horace Walpole (17171797), the antiquarian, politician, and author of The Castle of Otranto, and his godson and namesake Horatio, Lord Nelson (17581805). More commonly titled Merope after its protagonist, the libretto of La tirannide vendicata by Apostolo Zeno (16681750) has been set to music by several composers; the present performance, at Pesaro during Carnival in 1726, was to a now-lost score by Luca Antonio Predieri (16881767), sung by musicians from around Italy listed on A3v. The copy at the University of California Berkeley, though damaged, preserves a contemporary binding in carta rustica with an identical sewing structure, suggesting that our copy may in fact have been bound in a simple and cheap binding with the rest of the edition, before being covered in costly silk damask for presentation. OCLC finds only one copy worldwide, at Berkeley; not in RISM, Library Hub, or OPAC SBN. Language: Italian.

Produced around the Caspian Sea and found in western European bookbinding from the seventeenth-century, the irregular pimpled pattern of shagreen was produced by trampling small seeds into wet donkey skin. A durable and expensive material, it is almost always found with little or no decoration on small-format devotional books; it is here ornamented with intricate silver filigree centre- and cornerpieces and matching clasps to produce an elaborate though still-sombre effect. A loosely inserted note testifies to this volume's continuous chain of ownership, serving as a gift or memento and passing between five women in two families across the course of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Provenance: 1. 'This French Psalm Book was left me by Mrs Jane Horsman of Bath. Received it Janry 1795.' 2. He is known to have decorated the books in his library with distinctive geometric pen-and-ink designs, and although his designs are found also on professional plain vellum bindings the highly unusual and slightly clumsy structure here suggests that Bédigis most likely bound (or at least re-covered) books when necessary, to produce a blank surface on which to work.
