Beautifully signed and inscribed by Roald Dahl at front endpaper: "Olwen, Love Roald Dahl." Bold large inscription and signature fills the page. According to prior collector, Olwen in this case refers… to Olwen Barnard (born Hill-Duffy), a relation to Sir Joseph Brian Barnard of North Yorkshire. Olwen, pronounced O-loon, is of Welsh origin and a name for girls translating as "white footprint" or "white track." According to legend, the goddess Olwen was so gentle and fragile that white trefoils or clovers grew in her footprints. Olwen is a Welsh favorite, and was also the name of a legendary princess in what is believed to be the earliest Arthurian romance. Other sources cite Olwen as a Welsh sun goddess whose name means golden wheel. According to this tale, she overcame thirteen obstacles to obtain her true love; and thus teaches tenacity in obtaining goals. Red textured boards, gilt spine titles, light shelf wear, bump. Pages near fine; no writing. Dynamic illustration by Quentin Blake profusely throughout. Pictorial bookmark set in stating: "Signed." Bind fine, square; hinges intact. Original dust wrapper, light shelf wear; clipped, protected in new clear sleeve. Bookstore label remains above price clipping at lower front flap with price marked out and appearing to say: "KG, Price in [GBP symbol]." Rather humorous and apropos dust wrapper features bold red and black titles with color illustration of the Twits at front panel; back panel features the monkeys standing on their heads with the repeated titles placed upside down. Scarce near fine signed early printing in same wrapper. Bored with playing minor juvenile tricks on each nother, the sick and satisfyingly revolting Twits turn attention to capturing a family of monkeys for a circus act. The monkey's cruel incarceration in a cage is avenged when the birds trick the Twits into believing the world has turned upside-down. Mr. and Mrs. Twit are the smelliest, nastiest, most abhorrent people in the world. They hate everything, except playing fiendish pranks on each other, catching unsuspecting birds to put in their bird pies, and making their caged monkeys, the Muggle-Wumps, stand on their heads all day. But the Muggle-Wumps have had enough! With the help of Roly-Poly Bird, they prepare for some well-deserved revenge served cold. And. Roald Dahl's thrillingly grotesque tale features the deliciously wicked, and deftly appropos, artwork of Quentin Blake. They're disgusting and despicable--they're the Twits! "It's nothing but delicious riddance to rotten rubbish! Parents may turn chartreuse or puce at the descriptions of the Twits, but little ones will squeal in delighted disgust." - School Library Journal. Printed in Great Britain by Mackay's of Chatham. Add to basketA first edition, first printing of 'George's Marvellous Medicine' published by Cape in 1981. A near fine book without inscriptions - a trace of spotting to the top edge in a near fine wrapper without fade to the spine. Clipped, with a little rubbing to the corners. SIGNED to the title page by Blake without dedication. A darkly f…unny children's story about George, who creates a magical concoction to cure his horrid Grandma. Using wild household ingredientsfrom shampoo to engine oilhe brews a medicine that makes Grandma grow enormously tall, then shrink to nothing when George can't recreate it. The tale highlights mischief, imagination, and consequences, with quirky language, surprising transformations, and Dahl's characteristic blend of humour and menace.

Add to basketFirst edition, signed by the author on the title page in black ink. Dahl and Blake achieved considerable success with The Enormous Crocodile in 1978, and this, another picture book for young children, was a worthy successor. This copy was originally bought from a bookshop in Chesham shortly after publication. Chesham is approxim…ately five miles from Dahl's home town of Great Missenden, and it appears that at least one local bookshop offered signed copies for sale. When Dahl delivered the typescript to his English publisher, Tom Maschler responded with a note stating "Vintage Dahl. And with new aspects as well. What more could one ask?" (Treglown, p. 252). A review in the Times Literary Supplement noted "there are better things than this in children's literature but this will fill that space where the ego and the libido run riot, where the only relationship is the camaraderie between fellow gluttons". Jeremy Treglown, Roald Dahl, a biography, 1994; Times Literary Supplement, 29 November 1985, p. 1359. Quarto. Illustrated by Quentin Blake. Original illustrated boards, spine and front cover lettered in black, dark blue endpapers. No dust jacket, as issued. Head and foot of spine a little bumped, spine slightly sunned, chip to edge of rear board, some minor marks to boards: a very good copy.

The contents clean throughout and without previous owners' marks. The top edge of the closed text block of 'Going Solo' is a little spotted. Complete with the bright original dustwrappers that are without fading, loss or tears. Not price-clipped (£6.50 net and £7.95 net to the lower front flap). 'Boy' is inscribed by the author in blue and black ink on the half title 'To James / Love / Roald Dahl / 1985'. 'Going Solo' is signed by Roald Dahl in blue ink on the half title. A beautiful signed set of Dahl's autobiographical works. The first book explores Dahl's youth and Norwegian roots, his hilarious boarding school escapades, and reveals the inspiration for his classic children's novel 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' (1964); while the second focuses on Dahl as a young man, particularly his adventures overseas working for Shell Oil and later with the Royal Air Force in the Second World War. Add to basketFirst edition, early printing of this Dahl classic, which has sold over 20 million copies. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated by Quentin Blake. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "Love Doug Roald Dahl 1984." Additionally signed by Quentin Blake below. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Roald D…ahl is now considered one of the most beloved storytellers of the twentieth century. Dahl's ability to twist words into a clever and creative new language is fascinating to children, and is evident in BFG. The gruesome descriptions of the horrid giants and the subtle allusions to other stories will entertain children young and old. An animated adaptation was released in theatres in 1987 with David Jason providing the voice of the BFG and Amanda Root as the voice of Sophie. It was also the basis for the 2016 film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, written by Melissa Mathison and starring Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill, Penelope Wilton, Jemaine Clement, Rebecca Hall, Rafe Spall and Bill Hader.
