Covers with engraved image of a man and a woman in idealised pastoral dress, sharing a cup - a motif for romantic allegory. Probably after Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki (1726-1801) a German artist of almanacs. Spine with matching decoration and blocked titling. Complete with matching slipcase depicting a woman playing her harp. Slipcase is rubbed and slightly faded, with occasional marks. Not in Grand-Carteret. Printed upon the very thinnest Oxford India Paper ever made with a small magnifying glass in the front cover. All edges gilt. Original black endpapers. First ten leaves slightly crinkled on the fore-edges. 28 x 42 mm. Contemporary red morocco, spine with gilt lettering within gilt curlicue pattern decoration and four double ruled panels; covers with empty central oval panel within curlicue pattern decoration and double ruled borders. Spine and corners a trifle rubbed. David Bryce (1845-1923) was one of the world's most prolific and successful makers of miniature books, entering the book trade at the age of 17 when he was made a partner in his father's publishing house, later becaming sole proprietor on his father's death in 1870. Shortly after this, he started producing the miniature books that were to make him famous. David Bryce & Sons of Glasgow was took an active interest around the turn of the 19th century in the latest technological advances in photolithography and electroplates to allow larger volumes to be reduced to the smallest possible size. Their miniature publications have been prized for their clarity and legibility. With Glasgow University Press, Bryce issued the earliest complete miniature Bible in 1896, at the time the smallest complete bible ever printed, a reduced facsimile of the Oxford sextodecimo edition. Many of them were presented to serving soldiers throughout the British Empire, easily carried in the Boer War campaigns at that time & later in the First World War. Bondy, 108. Garbett, 20. Paroles d'un croyant was a groundbreaking work that bridged romanticism, democracy, and religion. Written in a lyrical, prophetic, and Biblical verse style, it called for the liberation of the people and condemned the alliance between kings and conservative church officials. The book marked Lamennais's official severance from the Catholic Church. Following its 1834 publication, Pope Gregory XVI issued the encyclical Singulari Nos, condemning the book as "small in size, [but] enormous in wickedness". Brussels was a major center for publishing, often bypassing French censorship. The 1838 E. Laurent edition is a testament to the continued high demand and radical impact of the text years after the Pope's condemnation. This edition was published at a time when Lamennais had already shifted completely to "Christian socialism," influencing a generation of radical thinkers. Sir Thomas Clifford Allbutt KCB, MA, MD, ScD, FRS (20 July 1836 - 22 February 1925) was an English physician best known for his role as president of the British Medical Association 1920, for inventing the clinical thermometer, and for supporting Sir William Osler in founding the History of Medicine Society. He is believed to have been the model for George Eliot's Dr Lydgate in Middlemarch. Allbutt has been commemorated with a Leeds Civic Trust blue plaque. Watkins &Co. specialised in binding bibles and was located at Cowan Street, Burgess Park, Camberwell, South London until 1977.

Tiny amount of light rubbing. Unknown and unrecorded imprint. There are quite a few well-documented series of nineteenth century and older English almanacs - but some, such as this are local and unspecified imprints that fly under the radar. While the British Museum was undergoing massive expansion in the 1840s and had suffered the vandalism of the Portland Vase in February 1845, the May closure was a planned, regular occurrence, not an emergency closure.

Goode's penny publications, such as this, made reading accessible to the growing working-class readership, encouraging literacy. This publication was one of the stock penny lines of the London street vendors and is interesting for its illustrations and specific literary form combining prose and poetry; the dual approach aimed to engage readers through different literary styles: descriptive prose for factual accounts and poetic verse for devotional or reflective passages. Dramatic illustrations made them the precursors to penny dreadfuls and modern comics.

This is a beautifully illustrated cautionary and humorous story of three crows assembling a feast of roast beef, plum pudding, and a drink to go with it. In 1890, Robert Gardner & Co. was a prominent firm of lithographers and ornamental printers based at 52 North Frederick Street, Glasgow. Established in 1854, the company was highly regarded for its technical expertise in chromolithography and "photo-process" work, with its productions reaching markets globally. In 1893, three years after this booklet was published, Dingley wrote Touchers and rubs on ye anciente royale game of bowles, published by Bryce. In 1899, David Bryce and Son published For Pen and Pencil Jottings with illustrations by Dingley. This item has impeccable documented provenance as having belonged to David Bryce: it was carefully and lovingly handed down within the direct family of David Bryce until finally disposed of in 2025 by the great-niece of David Bryce's grandaughter.

Spine and corners somewhat rubbed. No copies found in WorldCat worldwide. Hitherto unrecorded and a surprising survivor since its very purpose was entirely ephemeral. The canning factory at Bardney was purpose-built in 1931 by A.W. Foster and Company. It was one of the early large-scale fruit and vegetable canning operations in Lincolnshire, a county famous for its agriculture. Despite building the factory, A.W. Foster & Co. only operated it independently for a short time. In March 1932, the business was purchased by the American-owned John Morrell and Co. Ltd. Even after the 1932 sale, the Foster's and 'Daisy' brand names were considered so valuable that they continued to be used for marketing until at least1946, when the company was fully merged into John Morrell & Co. By 1936, the factory was a major local employer and a key part of the national supply chain for 'English garden' style canned vegetables, notably peas and fruits, which were marketed under the high-quality 'Daisy' label. The site remained a hub for food production under various owners (including Premier Foods and BP Nutrition) for over 60 years until its closure in April 1994.

His writings were among the most popular of the era, frequently focused on providing solace during "seasons of sorrow". The circa 1885 edition is noteworthy as it represents the Religious Tract Society at the height of its commercial and charitable success, shortly before its centennial jubilee in 1899.
