First Edition, First Printing First State: with the date of 1872 to the rear catalog: A beautiful clean book in fire engine red cloth with ornate gilt…titles to the spine and gilt titles to the front. The very scarce Sampson Low edition which preceded the US first printing and currently the only first state copy on the market. This book came out in 1873, with 99% of those published having the date of 1874 on the copyright page, and only a small handful with the 1873 date. This copy has the 1874 date but the requisite first state displaying the 1872 dated catalog at the back of the book. The book is in fantastic condition with fire engine red cloth and vibrant gilt titles to the spine with the classic gilt scene of the dials representing time to the front of the book. The book was professionally recased so the binding is very solid and quite readable. Original peach coated end papers and tissue guard. Error present on the illustration index (showing page 35 written as page 53). Full gilt outer page block in excellent condition. The book has no owner names, and no inscriptions. The interior pages are overall remarkably clean and fresh with only some very rare occasional scattered pale foxing. The tissue guard has a bit of foxing which then appears as a spot on the title page. The book has no edgewear, and the binding is very tight. Has a spectacular presentation in very hard to locate condition. Please see many detailed images. An incredibly rare book in stunning condition! Perfect for a Verne collector, presenting well on the shelf with a nice crisp readable binding, and without the excessive wear, and broken bindings as is typically found with Verne books. It seems to have had production problems that caused the spine to crack and chip when the book was read; consequently no 1873 copies have been seen in better than good condition (p. 42)." First published in late 1873 (though most copies were dated 1874) this extraordinary voyage was an instant hit with the British public and went through 5 editions in a year. This is a copy of the 5th e…dition from 1875, the last to appear in the highly ornate binding with gilt edges used as on the first. The 6th from 1879 is already substantially plainer. Dark green, sand-grained cloth over bevelled boards with elaborate illustration and lettering in gilt and black to front cover and spine with blind rules to lower cover. All edges gilt, light peach endpapers. Squarish 8vo with 315pp text + 54 inserted plates including tissue-guarded frontis, all present. 48pp publisher's catalogue at rear dated January 1876 noting Verne's titles up to and including The Survivors of the Chancellor (1875). Very neat professional repair to small patches of wear at head and tail of spine using matching period cloth. Original ownership inscription from 1877 on verso of frontis. Slight, vague signs of shelf wear and handling but overall an exceptionally clean and bright copy of a very scarce work in this format - one of the iconic books of the modern world. Mylar wrap (removed for photos). Light edge wear. A few spots on rear. Bookplate with 1976 ink notation on front pastedown and faint inscription on… front free. Foxing to tissue guard and title. Title page loosening. Corners folded and occasionally torn to p. 19. A few pages jutting out slightly. Colour off bottom corners. The most celebrated of all Verne's works, later published as "Around the World in Eighty Days." Also the book that provoked an interest in world circumference records for the next 100 years. The best- known attempt on the record was that of Nellie Bly who completed the trip in just over 72 days in 1889-90, finding time to drop in on Verne at home in Amiens along the way.
