The novel's vision of Soviet life in the 1930s is so ferociously accurate that it could not be published during its author's lifetime and appeared only in a censored edition in the 1960s. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Bulgakov, Mikhail. The Master and Margarita. Translated from the Russian by Michael Glenny. New York: Harper & Row, 1967. First U.S. edition / first American edition of the Glenny translation. Octavo; black cloth lettered in silver and red; vi, 394 p…p. Dust jacket design by Mercer Mayer. Condition: Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Book is sound and complete, with light general wear appropriate to grade. Jacket shows some staining and light handling wear; not price-clipped. A presentable copy of a key twentieth-century novel, preserving the striking Mercer Mayer jacket art. Note: Harper & Row's 1967 American issue appeared the same year as Grove Press's competing translation; this edition is the Michael Glenny translation and is especially notable for Mayer's memorable black-cat jacket design. An attractive example of this classic work. Importance: Written in the Soviet Union under Stalin and published only after Bulgakov's death, The Master and Margarita is widely regarded as one of the defining novels of twentieth-century Russian literature. Its extraordinary blend of satire, fantasy, philosophical inquiry, and religious allegory has made it both a landmark of literary modernism and an enduring meditation on artistic freedom, moral courage, and the survival of imagination under repression. Mercer Mayer (illustrator).

Add to basketHardcover. First American Edition. pp. vi, [1-2], 3-394. Octavo, measures 5.75" x 8.5". Publisher's original black cloth boards, spine lettered in gilt and red; untrimmed fore edge; textured mustard-yellow endpapers. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine; otherwise, the extremities remain in excellent condition. Housed… in its original, highly coveted dustjacket, designed and illustrated by the renowned children's author and artist Mercer Mayer, whose striking cover art depicts a dishevelled, pistol-packing, bow-tied black cat. Dustjacket neatly price-clipped, with some light wear, chiefly confined to the head and foot of the spine panel (now housed in a protective mylar sleeve). Striking black-and-white portrait of Bulgakov appears on the inner rear panel, with code "1067" printed at the base of the inner front panel. A lovely copy of the scarce Glenny translation complete with its timeless dustjacket. References: See Proffer 883 (p. 90). Although the copyright leaf identifies this as the First American Edition, the present Michael Glenny translation, published by Harper & Row, was in fact preceded earlier that same year by Mirra Ginsburg's translation (see Proffer 882), issued by Grove Press. Proffer notes that the Ginsburg translation was "the censored version taken from the original Soviet journal publication of 1966-67." Nevertheless, the Glenny translation remains the de facto First American Edition in the eyes of most collectors and is the more desirable issue. The first British edition, likewise based on Glenny's translation, was published by Collins in 1967.
