Bradbury was 91 at the time, and would die the year this book was published. In fact, the book is copyrighted by the Bradbury estate. The dust jacket illustration is by renowned fantasy illustrator Charles Vess (Stardust, Sandman). 171 pages. First edition (first printing). A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. Bradbury's signature is basically illegible. This is one of the last books Bradbury signed. With the original receipt laid in.

Three copies of this collection, which prints a previously unpublished story, The Last Circus, and another, The Electrocution, published in a magazine in 1946 under the pseudonym William Elliott. With an 11-page introduction by William Nolan, a four-page afterword by Bradbury, and an illust…ration by Joe Mugnaini. This is a set of copies assembled by the collector Tom Garner and housed in one the the most elaborate clamshell boxes he ever commissioned. The box measures 13 by 19 inches, with the galleys unfolded in a custom paper envelope and the books inset into a removable tray. The contents are: 1). Unbound proof sheets (galleys), printed on rectos (front side) only, two pages per 18-by-12-inch sheet. There are three interesting aspects to these galleys. A) The colophon page includes a list of all the printed colophons, including the named presentation copies; B) Bradbury's afterword seems to have been written just about The Last Circus and in these galleys he makes no mention of the second story; in the published version, he adds half a sentence, which suggests that The Electrocution was not part of the original plan (it is included in these galleys, however; it's just not mentioned in Bradbury's essay); C) This is probably the dedication copy, as it is inscribed "For Bruce?with love from his friend Ray Bradbury 5/21/1980." These galleys do not include a dedication page; the published dedication was to Bruce Francis and Donn Albright. I have seen a number of copies of the finished books inscribed by Bradbury on October 25, 1980, which is likely the publication date. These proofs were inscribed months earlier and as Francis helped Herb Yellin with Lord John Press, these proofs were probably inscribed soon after they were printed; 2) A copy of the printed book in the 1/100 binding of black cloth and marbled paper-covered boards; however, there is no limitation page in this copy. The text block is that of the unsigned trade issue; 3) The trade issue, inscribed "For Bruce?Ray Bradbury. Oct. 25, 1980" and then below with "Best, William F. Nolan." Most likely, this is also a dedication copy, although Francis's copy with his name printed on the colophon was sold at PBA Galleries in 2016. The galleys are generally fine but for the first leaf, which has two quarter-sized stains; the black cloth spine of the unsigned 1/100 copy is somewhat faded, as often found; the trade issue is in the jacket with red lettering on yellow (the Ahearns, in their Author Price Guide, call this the first state, but I think they have it backwards; in my experience this is the most commonly seen jacket, and its design matches the label on the slipcases). The book is fine in a near fine jacket, with mild edgewear. Inscribed (as described above).

This edition has become much sought-after as Bradbury's last limited edition, with just 26 copies available. In addition to Bradbury's signature, these copies were also signed by the illustrator and by Peter Crowther and William F. Touponce, who contributed the introduction and afterword, respectively. Bradbury rewrote and revised about half of the stories for The October Country and the original versions of his early work remained out of print until this limited e…dition reissue. For this edition, edited by Donn Albright, spelling errors were corrected, but the text was kept intact. In addition, four other stories from the same era have been added. Each story is prefaced by a reproduction of the magazine cover where it originally appeared. At the back of the book are 53 pages of facsimiles of letters and typescripts related to Dark Carnival, all of which are published here for the first time. This edition also includes a history of Dark Carnival by Jon Eller, an introduction by Bradbury, and an afterword by Clive Barker. The book is accompanied by a CD of interviews with Bradbury and a chapbook story, Time Intervening, issued as a promotional item in an edition of 752 numbered copies. A bibliographically significant reissue of a landmark SF debut. This is one of 52 lettered copies issued in a drawer-like box with a metal knob. The box is illustrated with the US and UK covers of the first edition artwork. xxiii, 512 pages. First edition (first printing). A fine copy (the page block sags a bit) in a fine dust jacket. In a near fine drawer-box. This is one of 10 PPC (out of series) copies of the lettered issue. It is signed by Bradbury and Clive Barker on a tipped-in limitation sheet. The CD fine, with "#10" written on it, presumably indicating that this was the last of the 10 PPC copies. A short chapbook was sent to the purchasers of this book; it is not included here, possibly as issued. The print run of the chapbook was supposedly 752 copies, which equals the total of the numbered and the lettered copies.

Add to basketRay Bradbury was, above all, a short-story writer, and in the 1960s Playboy was one of his most lucrative publication venues, earning him $2,000 to $3,000 each time they published something (according to the US Census, the median family income in 1965 was $6,900). These letters, written to and from the magazine's editorial staff…, show how at the beginning of the decade Bradbury was eager to publish in the magazine; by the second half of the 1960s, it was Playboy that pursued him, looking for material. In the early 1970s, both parties had mostly moved on. Bradbury, a committed self-promoter, writes enthusiastically about movies, which he calls "the most important artform in history," and about his efforts to stage the plays he wrote (Hugh Heffner, through his staff, declined to be an investor). The most revealing letter?one of two that extend to a second page?defends his views about the Irish. Accompanying Bradbury's 37 letters are nearly 70 pages of memos from Bradbury's agent, Don Congdon, as well as various members of the Playboy staff discussing their views on payments and the stories and essays Bradbury submitted. Sometimes Playboy's editors loved his work and sent him bonus checks; other times they rejected it or published it even though most of the editorial staff had reservations. A substantial collection of letters about Bradbury's work in the 1960s. The are listed in the order they appear in the binder containing the collection. 1. Feb. 16, 1962. TLS on cream-colored paper. Spectorsky, associate publisher at Playboy, asking him to meet Bradbury's friend Dan Greenberg (sic, Greenburg), who wanted to pitch travel stories to the magazine. With a hand-written postscript, "I was heartened to hear of your buying 'Machineries of Joy' this week. Bravo." Greenburg later was the managing editor of the hardcover magazine Eros and wrote humor and children's books. Signed "Ray Bradbury." About 100 words. 3. June 23, 1962. TLS on cream-colored paper. To A. C. Spectorsky, asking about the publication schedules for his stories The Queen's Own (The Anthem Sprinters) and The Machineries of Joy. Bradbury begins by wishing Playboy well on its planned book publishing. "Books are burgeoning. And after all the doomful predictions that tv would leave the country a barren wasteland." He also writes about a commission from Life magazine to write about the Apollo age and a request from Sam Bass that Bradbury work on a film for the New York World's Fair. Bradbury concludes, presumably referring to his wife and four daughters, "I know I'm surrounded by a sea of women, but.those Bunnies look awfully good." Signed "Ray." About 275 words. 6. Oct. 9, 1962. TLS on cream-colored paper. To A. C. Spectorsky. About the story Heavy-Set, which Playboy had agreed to buy. Apparently there was some confusion?Playboy wanted changes and Bradbury said he was willing to revisit the text "if and when [he] saw places to make the changes." He continues, "I can only repeat, I will continue to re-read the story. It will not be out of my mind. As the months pass I hope to see some small change which I can make. If not, I'll tell you, and you can publish the story as it stands." (The story was published in October 1964.) Signed "Ray." About 175 words. 7. Mar. 11, 1963. TLS on cream-colored paper. To A. C. Spectorsky. About an article about horror films commissioned by Playboy. Bradbury explains that there is interest in a TV special on the same subject and attempts to negotiate doing both (according to The Bradbury Companion, neither materialized). He concludes with his thesis about horror films: "If among other things we had more good horror films, our society would be less sick than it is. I'm not saying we could cure ourselves completely, but we could do better than we have been doing ever since we gave up understanding what art, films, novels, stories, myths, etc., can do for us in the way of discharging our tensions before they accumulate to the point of destruction." The preliminaries were reformatted between the pro…of and trade publication, but the content appears to be the same but for a blank acknowledgements page in the proof and no acknowledgements in the trade. In the proof, the copyright information about the stories is run together as a single text block; in the trade edition, the stories are each listed on separate lines. The proof is bound in blue printed wrappers. First trade edition (first printing, with a numberline ending in 1). A fine copy in a fine dust jacket, signed by Bradbury on the title page. The proof is near fine, with small stains on the half-title page; a National Book Award sticker has been added to the front cover, possibly by the author (Bradbury was given the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters). This copy is inscribed to the Bradbury collector Tom Garner and may be a presentation copy (sent by Bradbury to Garner): "Tom! At last! Enjoy. Love! Ray Brad-bury May, '03." The book was published in August of that year. The two books are housed in one of Tom Garner's distinctive clamshell boxes. The proof is uncommon.
