Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Best selling memoir recounting Heinrich Harrer's adventures as one of the first Europeans to enter Tibet and his encounters with the Dalai Lama. A good companion book to Peter Aufschnaiter's Eight Years in Tibet, during the same period though Peter's book is a… very different style and compiled post-mortem. Dark black linen cover with red linen spine. Both contain gold foil lettering and there is an embossed design of the Potala on the cover. This is an extremely good first edition published by E.P. Dutton and Company, New York, in 1954. Translated by Richard Graves. introduction by Peter Fleming. The only blemish is Ilwaco School Library stamped on several pages, and a first ownership slip pasted inside the front cover that reads Emery & Sylvia Neale. Comes with the original dust jacket (not photographed) that is wrapped in foil for protection and does have small tears in the upper left and right corners. 314 pages. 46 total illustrations/ photographs including a full spread map in the front. Clean pages without markings or tears. Tight binding indicative of minimal use. Please review the photos as they form an important part of the description. The current owner, anthropologist and writer Don Messerschmidt, PhD, is known for his research and writings on the Himalayas and related topics. He has published books and articles internationally since the 1960s when he first lived in Nepal as an American Peace Corps volunteer. He went on to enhance his understanding of Himalayan peoples and places as an independent researcher and on numerous consultancies. For over a half-century, he has been engaged in field studies, university professorships, and writing about the rich cultures of Bhutan, Nepal, North India, and Tibet. Along the way, he amassed an extensive library of Himalayan studies and has written several of his own, including two prize-winners. He has also been an editor for two regional magazines and has been called upon to review and pen chapters and forewords for Himalayan-oriented publications.
