Three identical (2" x 2 3/4") illustrated "Andenken an Andechs" (Andechs memorial cards) with engraving, golden borders and decorative edges, also laid-in. Engraving shows a protective Mother Mary over the town of Andechs. Prayer printed in German, gothic script on verso of card. Some age wear and staining on velvet. Rubbing and very slight chipping on head and tail of spine. Interior in very good to near fine condition.

As stated on the colophon, this is #34 from a limited run of 45 copi…es printed on Madagascar paper, part of a larger limitation of 365 copies, 300 of which are the more common Rives paper copies. The first 5 copies were printed on Imperial Japan paper, and there were also 15 registered non-trade copies. Pages uncut. Illustrated title page. A fine press limited edition of Henri Duvernois' short story "Morte La Bete" (Death [of] the Beast), originally published in 1921. Text throughout is accompanied by a total of 30 pochoir prints by Jean Saudé after original aquarelles by L. Lacoste, 11 of which are full page plates interleaved (including a frontispiece) and the other 19 are in text illustrations. Most of the images are in color, and some are erotic in content. This copy is also special in that it one of the few number of copies which contain a complete second suite of the same 11 plates bound in at the rear. All full page plates are protected with tissue guards. Text in French. Printed jacket with some minor rubbing to extremities, and a few minor smudges on the cover. Interior with some light bibliographic notes from a previous owner in pencil written on the front and rear free endpapers. Wrappers in very good+to near fine, interior in near fine condition overall. Protected by modern mylar. About the author: Henri Duvernois (pseudonym of Henri-Simon Schwabacher, 1875-1935) was a French author, playwright and screenwriter. His diverse body of work was known for realism and moral themes. He was a good friend of Marcel Proust.

Maps of the Danube delta and comparative plans of the mouth and of some river sections of the Soulina arm showing the last works which were carried out there by the European Commission according to the projects of Sir Chr. A. Hartley, its leading engineer, following the collection of comparative plans published by the commission in 1867. The commission of the Danube River (Commission Européenne) was authorized by the Treaty of Paris (1856), following the end of the Crimean War, and is considered the most successful international commission to control the Danube Delta commerce. It was the precursor of the League of Nations, the U.N. and the EU. This extensive atlas with detailed maps, charts and technical plans was compiled by the Commission to present the regulations put in place at the Danube Delta between 1857 and 1867, the first decade of neutrality of the region. It contains a detailed folding map of the Danube delta (30 x 50" / 1:100,000), rendered in color lithography as all plates, showing ports, Danube canals and their depth, compared to Russian measurements of 1829. The second folding map also showing the Danube Delta and additional maps showing various parts of the delta and its distributaries in detail, followed by charts and technical plans. All plates printed to double pages. Text in French. Binding with some wear, bump at lower right corner, closed tear at tail of spine, with very light scuffing, rubbed and very light soiling. Large map reinforced with brown tape on verso, bleeding through, and small 3 x 2/12/" taping on front with two and a half inch closed tear here. Light foxing of endpapers and first few pages. Brown spots on plates XXI through XVII, barely affecting lithographs, mostly at margins of five plates. Binding in overall good, interior in very good- to very good+ condition.

Contains a stiff gray double page with black lettering, publisher's device and ruling on cover, instructing on the application of the Baumann-Prase Color Tone Card with paragraphs on "same value harmonies (Wertgleiche Harmonien), same color tone harmonies (Farbtongleiche Harmonien), and compound color harmonies (Zusammengesetzte Farbenharmonien)." Page three features a color circle with additional, movable circle indicating the contrast colors, simple dyads, tryads and tetrads of color combinations. The sixteen page booklet contains a preface by the publisher, an introduction by Otto Prase, and paragraphs on the kind and designation of color tones, the color circle, the shading scale, the color stair, general notations on the shading scales, and the shading scale to plates 1 and 2. The section of mixing tables opens with a two-page folded color circle with shading scales, protected by tissue guard. The thirty-eight colors on circle and scale are silkscreened, as are the color scales with up to thirty-six colors per plate of the forty seven mixing scales. Each of the forty-seven mixing tables with three rows of silkscreened color scales glued to stiff heavy paper with printed abbreviated mixing formulas and additional regular paper sheet glued to left edge of each plate. These glued pages contain printed schemes of the methodological gradation of one tone of the color circle, elaborate on colorants, their qualities and usability of the various colors on one side, e.g. Diamond Black, Ivory Black, the mixing tables to the respective plates are printed to versos. Text in German. Slipcase with light wear, small color stain on cover of portfolio, some very light age-toning.

Protected by modern mylar i…n portfolio with clear plastic cover and black backing, stitched black leather frames with decorative bass corners. The printed part of the document attests that the bearer of this passport is not known to have been at any infected or suspicious location nor has been in contact with infected or suspicious people, and furthermore has applied for this passport and certification. Permission to travel in a safe and unimpeded fashion is herewith granted. Completed in handwriting for the Jew (Juden) Abraham Salomon and his son Marcus granting permission to travel from Nauen via Brandenburg to Halberstadt and Frankfurt/Main. Further handwritten entries on the reverse of the document show Salomon being in Frankfurt/Main on September 27, 1746, and in Berlin on August 28th, 1748. Atrocities of Chmielnicki (1648, in the Ukrainian part of southeastern Poland) and his Cossacks in the 17th Century drove Polish Jews back into western Germany. Prussia readmitted them in 1671 and this trend accelerated throughout the 18th century as other parts of Germany began to follow suit. In 1730 special letters of protection were granted to David Hirsch in Potsdam (province of Brandenburg) and soon to other Jewish manufacturers. An Abraham Salomon is mentioned in Corpus Constitutionum Marchicarum, part v, p. 167, Brandenburg 1740, and in Novum Corpus Constitutionum Prussico-Brandenburgensium praecipue Marchicarum, vol. 5, p. 537; a 1773 list of Jews contains the name Abraham Salomon. Text in German. Very light wear along edges and tear in middle fold of bottom half of document. Some staining and light foxing, mainly on lower right corner of verso. Remnants of wax seal on front, miniscule on verso. Overall in very good condition.

Fifty page section in first part of book by Rahel's husband, Karl August Varnhagen von Ense, who self-published this work in a limited edition for close friends. He writes about his first encounter with Rahel, his life and experiences with his wife, as well as her early death in 1833, at the age of 62. Rahel came from a well-to-do Berlin Jewish family. During the late 18th and early 19th century she was a preeminent literary hostess in Berlin at one of the most prominent salons in Europe. Many of her popular soirées were attended by the Romantics writers of the period. She briefly lost her fortune in 1806, but after meeting and marrying Prussian diplomat K. A. Varnhagen von Ense, Rahel's salon once again became the most notable social focus of Berlin literary life and was frequented by the likes of Heinrich Heine, Alexander von Humboldt, F. de la Motte Foqué, A. Von Chamisso, Ludwig Tieck, Friedrich Gentz, Schlegel, and others. Text in German, gothic script. Some age wear and heavy staining on binding. Head and tail of spine chipped. Faded green page edges. Foxing on first few leaves, incl. frontispiece, title-page and on few pages throughout. Small closed tear along gutter on page 591. Binding in fair, interior in overall very good condition. (Goedecke VI, 185,6; Brieger 2396). This self-published 'Privatdruck' by K. A. Varnhagen von Ense which was presented to friends and not offered for sale. A three volume edition for the general public was published a year later by Duncker and Humblot.

The first volume includes a total of 21 full-page facsimile plates lavishly reproduced in color collotype with gilt overprinting (including one loose color plate laid in at the front). The second volume contains 1 additional color plate as the frontispiece, and 269 sepia-toned collotype plates in sequence. Missing the original slipcase, but including the loose color plate* laid in the front of the first volume, as issued. Shanameh, the epic poem written by Ferdowsi between 977-1010, is considered the national epic of the Persian people. Consisting of 50,000 couplets, it is the longest epic poem by a single author. The illuminated manuscript known as the Houghton Shanameh (or Shahnameh of Shah Tahmasp) is among the most famous, and likely the most fully illustrated copy of the work. It is considered to contain some of the most lavish and acclaimed examples of Persian miniature painting known. The manuscript's creation likely began sometime in the 1520s at royal workshop in Tabriz, by the order of Shah Ismail I of Safavid Persia, and was completed under the reign of Ismail's son Tahmasp I, sometime in the 1530s. Upon completion, it contained a total of 759 pages, 258 of which were miniatures, created by a large group of the top artists of the period, only some of whom have been identified - including Mir Sayyid Ali, Sultan Mohammad, Mizra-Ali (son of Sultan Mohammad), Aqa Mirak, Mir Musavvir, Dust Muhammad, and likely Abd al-Samad. Years later, in 1568, the manuscript was presented as a gift to Ottoman Sultan Selim II. After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, it became part of the collection of Edmond James de Rothschild, and then was later bought by American industrialist Arthur Houghton Jr. The first volume of this set serves as a comprehensive scholarly analysis of the work by Persian history and Islamic art scholars Martin Bernard Dickson and Stuart Cary Welch. This text contains an examination of both the literary content of the epic poem and its author, as well as the history of the Houghton Shahnameh manuscript itself, including a detailed history, and a discussion of the numerous artists who contributed are included. The volume is interleaved throughout with 21 selected examples of illuminated pages from the manuscript, gorgeously reproduced as color collotype facsimile plates, each measuring 11 3/4 x 17 3/4" (including their lustrous gilt-speckled borders). The plate laid in at the front is protected in a folded paper sleeve, with a printed text caption. All other bound-in color plates are protected with a tissue guard, each with a printed text caption. In addition, the volume is profusely illustrated throughout with countless other b/w photographic reproductions of plates and images, both larger full-page, and smaller in-text images. Tables of content, list of illustrations, and a lengthy index are also included. The second volume contains the final color plate as its frontispiece, reproducing the Rosette ex-libris of the Shah of Tahmash the Safavi, from the manuscript. This is followed by 269 sepia-toned full-page collotype facsimile reproductions of plates from the manuscript in sequential order. Each plates has corresponding text on the opposite page, contain detailed description and analysis of the content. The final pages include sections with additional notes and index. I had a wonderful time taking them (the pictures) and I enjoyed the works spent fixing them as they are, because I know that you have a desire to go into the game country of Africa and see for yourself. You may wish to frame some of them - do so if they will add a bit of attraction to the walls of your home, for then you can adventure into their very depths and look beyond the beyond. Let us plan an evening or two when I can show you some motion pictures of that country as seen through the eyes of an Oklahoman." The end of the letter is chipped and cannot be deciphered. This unique photo-album is composed of thirteen leaves (10 3/4 x 13 3/4") on photo paper by Eastman, each with photo-montage and double exposure, with the right side being a handwritten travelogue by Hugh S. Davis. This album is in overall good- to very good condition. * Waite Phillips (1883-1964) was an American petroleum businessman who created a fully integrated operation that combined petroleum producing, refining and marketing. With headquarters in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he also developed several office complexes and engaged in banking and ranching. Phillips was a philanthropist for both local Tulsa institutions and national causes. In Tulsa he built a 72-room mansion for his residence, which he later donated to the city; it became the Philbrook Museum of Art. He gave 127,000 acres (510 km2) of his favorite ranch in New Mexico to the Boy Scouts of America, together with an office building as part of its endowment. The ranch is now Philmont Scout Ranch, one of the largest youth camps in the world. Phillips also made a substantial bequest to the University of Southern California, which named a building after him. ** Martin Elmer Johnson (1884-1937) and his wife Osa Helen Johnson (1894-1953) were American adventurers and documentary filmmakers. In the first half of the 20th century, Martin and Osa Johnson, captured the public's imagination through their films and books of adventure in exotic, faraway lands. Photographers, explorers, marketers, naturalists and authors, Martin and Osa studied the wildlife and peoples of East and Central Africa, the South Pacific Islands and British North Borneo. They explored then-unknown lands and brought back film footage and photographs, offering many Americans their first understanding of these distant lands.

Second Gryphius edition, and a rather uncommon early sixteenth-century printing of Erasmus' Latin translation of the New Testament, first published at Basel in 1516. According to Baudrier, (Ly. V. 804101/Cat. de Lignerolles, Paris, Porquet, 1894 no. 48) Gryphius first published this translation in 1542 and 1543 as a 16mo of 847 pages; neither of these issues appear in Deleveau & Hillard. Like the present edition, these early Gryphius printings of the Erasmus New Testament survive in only a handful of copies. The text opens with Erasmus' dedication to pope Leo X, followed by his preface to the reader, a general index of the New Testament corpus, a listing of the chapters of the four Gospels, and a brief passage from Jerome's catalogue of ecclesiastical writings. The editor's introductions precede each book. The text concludes with Erasmus' translation of a brief discussion of apocryphal literature, partly from Athanasius (though Erasmus questions the attribution): "De libris utriusque testamenti partim reiectus, aut non sine contradictione admissis, partim apocryphis ex Athanasio tametsi mihi suspectus est titulus." Provenance and annotations: Extensive early annotations in more than one hand appear throughout the book; many marginal notes have been added throughout the Gospel of Matthew. At the front of the book, beginning with the free endleaf: "Poeta de Pythogora" (several stanzas in Latin and Greek); facing the title: A morning prayer "Oro matutina lecturis oracula divina" (11 lines); an accounting of biblical eras (10 lines) since Abraham, David, and the Babylonian Exile appears at the verso of the title leaf. The final blank page, the two intergral blank leaves, and two additional blanks added by the binder are filled with notes (in several different hands), including: a passage from Augustine's De doctrina christianae (14 lines; noted as book 2, chapters 11 and 12), along with four lines about Tertullian; four pages of notes on the twelve disciples (numbered); a Greek text discussing the divine names in which the tetragrammaton is written in Hebrew letters; a passage from a letter of Basilius Magnus in Greek, with Latin translation. Printed label of Edward Davis Hoblyn (1809-1881), and his manuscript entry dated 1831 at the free endleaf. Edward was likely related to the renowned book collector, Robert Hoblyn (1710-1756) of Cornwall. A catalogue of Robert's collection was printed in 1768 as Bibliotheca Hobliniana, and reissued by Murray in 1769 with a new titlepage. The library remained with Robert's widow, and was sold in 1778. The present work is not listed in the Bibliotheca, though no fewer than nineteen 16th-century Latin Bibles and Testaments appear in the catalogue. Gift inscription of D. N. Goodman of San Francisco, Cal[ifornia] to Father J. L. Damas at front pastedown, dated 1935. References: Baudrier 8, 217. Baumgarten, Nach. v. merkw. Büchern 8 (1755), 206, noting that this, and the later Gryphius edition which Le Long assigns to the master printer's workshop, are in fact identical, and notable examples of elegant typography. First Hebrew-Latin edition of the first modern Hebrew work on geography, the author's most famous and important book. Abraham Farissol (or Peritsol) was a learned Jew from Avignon who compiled his cosmographical works at the court of the Estes in Ferrara. The present text was composed in 1524-25, and first published in Hebrew at Venice in 1586. The Latin translation and notes in the present edition were prepared by the English orientalist and librarian, Thomas Hyde (1636-1703), with the assistance of R. Isaac Abendana, working from a manuscript which Hyde located in the Bodleian Library. "Each of its 30 chapters deals with a certain geographical area or subject. In addition, many cosmological and historical matters are also treated. The author collected all the evidence he could regarding Jewish settlements in each country. The inclusion of a description of the New World makes Farissol the first Hebrew writer to deal in detail with the newly-discovered America. The 14th chapter of Iggeret Orhot Olam, which deals mainly with the settlements of the Ten Lost Tribes, is of special interest. According to Farissol's introduction to this chapter, it is clear that what moved him to undertake this investigation was the appearance in Italy in 1523 of David Reuveni, many of whose descriptions are included in this work" (EJ 6.1185). Reuveni was "an adventurer who aroused messianic hopes in the early 16th century" (EJ 14.114). The appended work is a tract on Islamic customs by Albert (Wojciech) Bobowski, a Polish Christian who converted to Islam after his capture by the Ottoman Turks. This rare document is based on a great number of important records which became accessible at the Deutsche Bank's Hamburg branch only after the end of WWII. For the first time, information is revealed on some rather unusual transactions which tend to incriminate the bank even further for its participation in spoliation and aryanization from 1933 to 1945*. Of particular interest is the description of the manner in which the Deutsche Bank, following the Munich agreement of 1938, grasped control of two outstanding Czech banking institutions: the Boehmische Unionbank and the Deutsche Agrar- und Industriebank. This work recounts the Deutsche Bank's participation in the "aryanization" of the German economy from 1932 to 1940, drawing on internal Deutsche Bank records as well as material seized by Allied troops after World War II. It shows how, as the Nazis began to rise to power, the bank reluctantly purged itself of Jewish directors, followed by Jewish employees, in response to state pressure. Later, the regime enlisted the bank employees' professional skills, domestic and foreign relationships, and financial muscle to eliminate Jewish control and ownership of German companies. The expropriation was conducted gradually, since many hastily seized companies proved worthless without the management of their Jewish former owners, and also because this method muted foreign criticism and preserved a veneer of legality. This stands in stark contrast to the brutally simple methods used by the Nazis in occupied countries and, after 1941, in Germany as well. The numerous incriminating documents retrieved at the end of the hostilities are reproduced in facsimile. The index of names includes institutions as well as names of high level Nazis and their supporters. Rare! No listing in KVK. In subsequent years, Deutsche Bank took part in the aryanization of Jewish-owned businesses; according to its own historians, the bank was involved in 363 such confiscations by November 1938. During the war, Deutsche Bank incorporated other banks that fell into German hands during the occupation of Eastern Europe. Deutsche provided banking facilities for the Gestapo and loaned the funds used to build the Auschwitz camp and the nearby IG Farben facilities. Deutsche Bank revealed its involvement in Auschwitz in February 1999. In December 1999 Deutsche Bank, along with other major German companies, contributed to a US$5.2 billion compensation fund following lawsuits brought by Holocaust survivors.[25][26] The history of Deutsche Bank during the Second World War has been documented by independent historians commissioned by the Bank. During World War II, Deutsche Bank became responsible for managing the Bohemian Union Bank in Prague, with branches in the Protectorate and in Slovakia, the Bankverein in Yugoslavia (which has now been divided into two financial corporations, one in Serbia and one in Croatia), the Albert de Barry Bank in Amsterdam, the National Bank of Greece in Athens, the Creditanstalt-Bankverein in Austria and Hungary, the Deutsch-Bulgarische Kreditbank in Bulgaria, and Banca Commercial Romana in Bucharest. Wrappers in overall good+ to very good, interior in fine condition. * Julius Hebing (1891-1973) was a German painter and researcher in the areas of Goethe's and Steiner's color theory (Goethe'schen und Steiner'schen Farbenlehre). Hebing experienced the horrors of W.W.I as an officer in the German army. As one of a few survivors after the bloody battle of Arras, in the ruins he found a booklet of Schopenhauer's "Aphorismen zur Lebensweisheit" which awakened his interest in Philosophie. In 1934 he exhibited 50 samples of his color theory at Steiner's Goetheanum. In 1949/50 he was asked to restore Rudolf Steiner's color sketches at the Rudolf Steiner-Nachlassverwaltung in Dornach, Switzerland. Julius Heber passed away on the 28th of August 1973. His theory is still taught at the Waldorfschulen. ** In the visual arts, color theory is a body of practical guidance to color mixing and the visual effects of a specific color combination. There are also definitions of colors based on the color wheel: primary color, secondary color and tertiary color. Although color theory principles first appeared in the writings of Leone Battista Alberti (ca 1435) and the notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci (ca 1490), a tradition of 'colory theory' began in the 18th century, initially within a partisan controversy around Isaac Newton's theory of color ("Opticks," 1704) and the nature of primary colors.

Taken from the Galata Tower,…in what is now the Karaköy neighborhood of Istanbul, this magnificent panorama displays the skyline and cityscape of Constantinople, as it appeared sometime in the late 1880s or early 1890s. The panorama is comprised of 10 original albumen photographs, mounted on heavy card stock, and bound together in accordion style (leporello), measuring a total of more then 11 feet when completely unfolded. Shot in a southwardly direction, the viewer can see Galata (Karaköy) in the foreground, and from left to right, across the Bosporus to the Uskudar district (on the Asian side), and then across the harbor at the mouth of the Golden Horn, the Galata Bridge, and across to the Pérama neighborhood and the Faith district, where many famous landmarks of the city can be seen, including the New Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia and many others. Each panel measures about 13" wide and 12" tall. The photography is credited to "Sebah & Joaillier" one of the most prominent and prolific photography studios of Ottoman Empire during the second half of 19th century. Originally founded sometime around 1857 in Instanbul by Syrian-Armenian photographer Pascal Sebah (1823-1886), the studio was one of the earliest in the city (and all of Ottoman Turkey). By the 1870s Sebah had become among the most prominent Ottoman photographers, having also opened a branch of the studio in Cairo. Upon Sebah's death in 1888, the firm was taken over by his 16 year-old son Jean (Pascal) Sebah, who then partnered with photographer Policarpe Joaillier (1848-1904). The firm was renamed "Sebah & Joaillier". Therefore, although this panorama is undated, it could not have been issued earlier than 1888; most likely sometime shortly thereafter, circa 1890. Spine of of the portfolio has been professionally re-backed. Plates with minor to light foxing, although the images are still quite clean and vibrant. Binding in very good, images in very good- to very good condition overall. * A slightly later version of the panorama from Sebah & Joaillier, simply titled "Constantinople" is comprised of 12 slightly smaller panels, instead of 10, and measures around the same size in total. Business and trial correspondence between the Bakelite manufacturer Friedrich Bernh. Sander in Gera (East Germany) and the sales representative Paul Niedenzu, Breslau. The correspondence contains some…30 pieces of typewritten letters between the contending parties including the original contract of July 1st, 1934, and official correspondence from courts. This is not a case of typical Aryanization, a Jewish-owned company taken over by non-Jews, but the case of an Aryan threatening another Aryan based on the business owner's refusal to let go of a Jewish sales representative in favor of the Aryan out of purely social concerns for the Jewish employee. According to the correspondence the business relation turned sour only 3 weeks after the initial contract was signed. In a contentious letter of July 19, 1934, the sales representative claims negligence and breach of contract on the part of the manufacturer, threatening with a lawsuit and a report of the incident to the Chambers of Commerce, and furthermore accuses the manufacturer in a typical Nazi scare tactic of boycotting the economy (".da ich Ihre Handlungen als Boykottierung der Wirtschaft betrachte.") as well as preferring a Jewish sales representative over him (".das Sie ausgerechnet eine Jüdin wie aus Ihren Briefen hervorgeht unterstützen und einen Christen ausnützen wollen."). In a flurry of contentious letters from both sides, following the letter of July 19, 1934, the focus shifts more and more towards the national socialist aspect culminating in Niedenzu's threat to report this incident to the NS magazine "Der Stürmer" and the Reichs Ministry in order to stigmatize the manufacturer. Subsequently Sander terminates the contract on August 3, 1934, effective immediately after having inquired about Niedenzu finding that a number of warrants for Niedenzu's arrest were issued in other matters. In a letter of August 14, 1934, Niedenzu suggests a settlement threatening at the same time to take his case directly to Reichs Minister "Dr. Goebels" (misspelled in the original letter) emphasizing his Aryan descent and implying that favoritism of a Jewish sales representative would certainly be frowned upon (".dürfte Ihnen ja bekannt sein we an oberen Stellen über die Judenfrage gedacht wird."). The correspondence includes details relating to accounting and a verdict, relating to a counter suit launched by Sander, of the district Court Breslau in favor of Sander. The file folder most likely stems from the records of the manufacturer considering the fact that Niedenzu's letters are originals, Sander letters copies. Folder with light wear. Some fraying of lower edges of four letters. Overall in very good condition.
