Together with an original handwritten Milne letter of amazing content where Milne discusses Christopher Robin (see below). The letter: two pages on… one sheet, dated December 20, 1942; Cotchford Farm, Sussex. A.A. Milne pens about his son Christopher Robin, Catalyst of the "Winnie the Pooh" stories at war in Iraq and wishing he were home Description: Single page ALS written on verso and recto, note paper, 5″ x 8″. Edges lightly creased, with one 2mm intact tear. Light foxing to edge of upper and lower edges outside of margins and not affecting text. Dated "20/xii/42" and signed "Ever Blue". Near fine. A wonderful letter by Milne written to his long time friend, Vincent Seligman ('Vi"). Milne's letter discusses Pat, his "treasure" who was now posted to a RAF just outside of Bristol in the midst of WWII, and his son Christopher Robin who is in Iraq. Milne shows his incredible attachment and fondness towards his son (who he has nicknamed Moon), which is reflected in his comment when he responds to a quote from Christopher: "He (Christopher) writes: " But I am well and happy, or what more can we want?" with Milne's response as "I want him home again, that's what!". The apparent attachment of the father/son relationship shows quite strongly in the letter, yet one feels a sense of melancholy as the reader knows the fleeting warmth in this familial bond was destined to change. In the following years there would be a dramatic shift in the nature of the father/son relationship. It was after the war, when Christopher was in his mid to late twenties that his resentment of his father came to a head. Christopher had tried several jobs but failed to find a niche and held his parents somehow responsible for his plight. He came to believe that his father "had got where he was by climbing on my infant shoulders, that he had filched from me my good name and had left me with nothing but the empty fame of being his son." It had reached a point of such an emotional barrier for Christopher that he hardly had any contact with his father, and rarely saw him. This is a sharp, hollow contrast to the idyllic ending that one would prefer to imagine for Christopher Robin and A.A. Milne, one where the reader would prefer to imagine instead that "in that enchanted place on the top of the Forest, a little boy and his Bear will always be playing". The lengthy letter also touches upon WWII, and Milne's postscript comment that "we're winning". The book: One of 30,000 first edition copies printed. Green cloth binding with charming Ernest H. Shepard illustrations. Pooh and Christopher Robin stamped in gilt to the front board. Original first state yellow pictorial dust jacket with 117th thousand printed on the back flap and 7/6 net pricing on the spine as called for. The front and rear papers are illustrated with a map of the "100 Aker Wood". The boards are clean and square. The gilding is vibrant and NOT rubbed out. The top page block gilding is present. No previous owner's scribbles, no bookplates, no stamps. A few light soiling smudges to a few leafs. As usual the map endpapers show the typical ghosting from the dust jacket's flaps. The original UNRESTORED dust jacket's spine is toned/ browned. The foot and crown of the spine with chips not affecting the lettering. Spine fold edges with tiny chips. Light soiling to panels. A near fine book in a very good dust jacket. First and Fine. Signed by Author(s).

'Winnie The Pooh' is a second edition…of 1926; 'House at Pooh Corner' is a third edition of 1929; 'When We Were Very Young' is a Nineteenth Edition of 1929, 'Now We Are Six' is a fifth edition of 1929.Milne was a prolific author and is now best-remembered for his creation of Winnie-The-Pooh and his many friends. This set of best selling works comprises of the first volume of stories solely regarding Pooh, 'Winnie-The-Pooh', and two poetry collections, 'Now We Are Six' and 'When We Were Very Young'. 'Now We are Six' contains thirty-five verses, eleven of which are accompanied by illustrations featuring Winnie-The-Pooh. 'When We Were Very Young' contains forty-four poems, including 'Teddy Bear' which, upon its initial publication in 'Punch' magazine, was the first literary appearance of Winnie-The-Pooh. The introduction to 'When We Were Very Young' implies that the narrator may be Christopher Robin.These works are illustrated by E H Shepard, a popular twentieth century illustrator whose pen and ink drawings were featured in all of Milne's works.Bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, with their binder's stamp to the front pastedown. All volumes are in a half calf binding, with gilt tooled silhouettes of the characters Winnie The Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Owl, Rabbit and Piglet to the spines. The boards are covered in charming paper which has a repeated animal motif. This same paper is used for the endpapers. Pleydell-Bouverie was a close friend of Stanley Bray, who worked at the firm for over 60 years. He often bound books for her as gifts.From the library at Julians Park, the former home of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie (Audrey Evelyn James Coats, and Audrey Evelyn James Field). Pleydell-Bouverie was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire. Audrey was also alleged to be the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, although she was also rumoured to be his daugher, or the lover of King Edward VIII. She bought Julians Park in 1940 following her third marriage to the Hon Peter Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was a patron of the arts and it is believed that she bound several books herself, as many books from her library were stamped with her name and she owned a group of bookbinding tools. Her circle of friends included Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel and Nancy Mitford. She was featured in Cecil Beaton's 'Book of Beauty' and was regarded as one of the Bright Young Things. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with light rubbing to the spines and extremities. Fading to the spine of 'When We Were Very Young'. Binder's stamp to the verso of front endpaper, 'Sangorski and Sutcliffe'. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are bright with occasional light spots. Very Good. Winnie the Pooh: Small vintage bookseller ticket to f…ront paste down, toning to endsheets. In first issue dust jacket with "117th Thousand" at the top of the rear flap, with two faint blue lines running horizontally at top third and bottom sixth of jacket, light crimping at top edge of front panel and very small losses at the top of the flap folds. Now We Are Six: Spine cloth faintly darkened. In first issue dust jacket with Winnie the Pooh listed at 70th Thousand and Fourth Edition on rear jacket flap; jacket has an L shaped teat at the top front spine joint extending across the spine and affecting the word "Are" in the title. The House at Pooh Corner: Toning to endsheets, and a light crimp to dust jacket at foot of spine, else a very sharp and bright copy in a first issue dust jacket with a price on the spine and "179th Thousand" on rear flap. While not complete (lacking the first book in the series When We Were Very Young), an honest and true set, with dust jacket spines uniformly sunned, with volumes not married or packaged together in modern times. A beautiful and bright set, in much nicer shape than as normally found in.

[Haring-Smith C79; Cutler-Stiles p. 116; Grolier, no. 71]. The second in the classic quartet of Milne's cycle based on the teddy bear which belonged to his son, Christopher Robin Milne. Pooh first appeared in a poem, published in Punch in February 1924, and reprinted in When We Were Very Young, but the character was only fully developed in Winnie-the-Pooh, which documents the adventures of the "bear of little brain." Accompanied by the magical drawings of Ernest H. Shepard, whom Milne had met as they both were contributors to Punch. Their collaboration spanned many projects and "Milne was so aware of the extent to which Shepard's drawings contributed to the success of Winnie-the-Pooh that he arranged for him to share in the royalties."
