Bright, well-preserved jacket was laminated by previous owner, some light tape marks to cover…s as a result, discreet book no.7 added to spine, shows well. Basis for the 1977 action film starring Richard Harris and Burgess Meredith. Alistair MacLean (1922-1987) was a hugely successful writer of thrillers and spy stories during the 'fifties and 'sixties. His debut novel HMS Ulysses was published in 1955, and a certain Ian Fleming, with three spy novels already under his belt, attended the book launch party. Over the next decade, MacLean became one of Fleming's chief rivals in the espionage genre. Many of MacLean's books were adapted into films, often scripted by the author himself; The future 007 series producer Cubby Broccoli believed 'The Guns of Navarone' film adaptation (1961) effectively "captured the spirit of the movies he wanted to be making" -James Bond The Legacy (2002), p.24.
