Add to basketSignet edition, later printing of Randsâ breakthrough work and her first major literary success. Duodecimo, original publisherâs pictorial wrappers, all edges stained yellow. In near fine condition. Although Rand was a previously published novelist and had a successful Broadway play, she faced difficulty in finding a publisher s…he thought right for The Fountainhead. She let Macmillian Publishing go when they rejected her demand for better publicity (Branden, 1986), and when her agent criticized the novel, she fired him and handled submissions herself (Burns, 2009). After sifting through eleven more publishers, Rand finally released The Fountainhead with Bobbs-Merrill Company in 1943. The reception was instant, and The Fountainhead became a bestseller in two years. The protagonist, Howard Roark, whose character was thought to be inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, is a young architect fighting against convention. Cited by numerous architects as an inspiration, Ayn Rand said the theme of the book was "individualism versus collectivism, not within politics but within a man's soul." Rand chose architecture as the analogy of her heady themes because of the context of the ascent of modern architecture. It provided an appropriate mode to make relevant her beliefs that the individual is of supreme value, the "fountainhead" of creativity, and that selfishness, properly understood as ethical egoism, is a virtue. Some critics consider The Fountainhead to be Rand's best novel (Merill, 1991). Indeed, philosopher Mark Kingwell described it as "Rand's best work" (Kingwell, 2006). In 1949 it was adapted to film, produced by Henry Blanke, directed by King Vidor, starring Gary Cooper, Patricia Neal, Raymond Massey, Robert Douglas, and Kent Smith.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A well-preserved early Bobbs-Merrill edition of Ayn Rand's landmark novel of architecture, individualism, and creative integrity. Published in 1943, The Fountainhead follows architect Howard Roark and became the work that established Rand as a major literary and philosophi…cal figure in twentieth-century America. This copy retains the publisher's original green cloth binding with gilt lettering and contains the dedication page 'To Frank O'Connor,' the complete text, and a contemporary gift inscription dated 1946, demonstrating ownership within only a few years of publication. Condition: Book grades Very Good-. Binding remains strong and secure with no loose pages. Interior is clean with no underlining, highlighting, or ownership markings beyond the thoughtful gift inscription on the front flyleaf. Pages remain generally bright with light age toning consistent with a 1940s publication. Green cloth boards show moderate shelf wear, rubbing, scattered spots of soiling, and fraying at the spine ends and corners. Gilt stamping remains legible though somewhat dulled. No dust jacket present. Copyright page shows 1943 Bobbs-Merrill copyright. No later-printing statement is visible, and the book retains the early publisher's binding and dedication leaf. However, absent additional first-printing points, this copy should be cataloged conservatively as an early Bobbs-Merrill printing (circa 1943-1946) rather than definitively as a first printing. The dated 1946 gift inscription establishes that the book was in circulation by that year. Ayn Rand (1905-1982) was a Russian-born American novelist and philosopher best known for The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. Her fiction popularized the philosophy she later termed Objectivism, emphasizing individual achievement, reason, and personal liberty. The Fountainhead remains one of the most influential and widely collected American novels of the twentieth century.
