The pages are clean with provenance of previous owner's name nicely written on the front endpaper dated 1901. There is NO marks or bookplates in the book. A lovely copy housed in a custom clamshell box for preservation. We buy Frank L. Baum First Editions.

First state of text with misprints "low wail" on page 14, "pieces" on page 81, and "While Tin Woodman" on page 271. Âillustrated title in Blanck's state A with no copyright stamp at verso, the plate showing Dorothy holding Toto by the ear appears opposite page 12 instead of page 14, with plates opposite pp. 34 and 92 in the uncorrected first state, rear pastedown featuring the 11-line colophon enclosed in a decorative border; in Bienvenue & Schmidt's binding B. In very good condition, neat reinforcements, expertly restored and reinforced, gift inscription to the front free endpaper. A very sharp example. L. Frank Baum worked in many trades before he wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, including publisher, poultry breeder, door-to-door salesman and newspaper editor. "Among the five Baum titles published in 1900, preeminent even then was The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The New York Times found it 'bright and joyous' and omnisciently offered, 'It will indeed be strange if there be a normal child who will not enjoy the story.' The first edition was a picturesque novelty with its 24 color plates and many line drawings; Denslow's conceptions of the characters and landscapes contributed immeasurably to the book's popularity" (Fricke, 22). Baum "set out to change children's books and made a lasting contribution to American literature. The Wizard of Oz has entered American folklore. It reflected and has altered the American character" (Hearn, xiii). "Those who read the Oz books are often made what they were not - imaginative, tolerant, alert to wonders, life" (Gore Vidal).

Original light green cloth pictorially stamped and lettered in red and a darker green (variant C with publisher's imprint at foot of spine in red in serifed type, with the "C" of "Co." encircling the "o"). Pictorial pastedown endpapers (issued without free endpapers). Cloth is lightly soiled and spine is a bit darkened, but without any restoration. Text with a small amount of soiling and finger smudging to outer margins. Some pages lightly toned. Plate facing page 44 with three tiny spots where the paper stuck to the facing page. Plate facing page 80 with a small closed marginal tear, not affecting illustration. Previous owner's old ink signature on preliminary leaf. Closed tear to front hinge which has been professionally restored. Overall, a very good copy of a book usually found in poor condition. Housed in a custom full green morocco clamshell. Color plates: 24 full-color, tipped-in inserts: title page and facing pages 12 (a rare variant identified by Blanck, most copies has this plate facing page 14), 20, 34, 36, 44, 56, 66, 80, 92, 102, 114, 126, [138], 150, 160, 170, 184, 198, 212, 220, 228, 246, 254. The verso of the illustrated title page is blank. The color plate facing page 34 has two dark-blue spots on the moon, however, the plate facing page 92 lacks red shading on the horizon. The book is collated complete. Cover: light-green cloth, stamped in read and green on the front, back and spine with variant "B" publisher's imprint at foot of spine (stamped in red "GEO.M.HILL CO." An expertly and sympathetically restored copy of the most famous and collectable American children's book of the 20th century. Extremities and outer hinges with a bit of rubbing and chipping. Boards with some light soiling and a light red stain to front board, expert restoration to hinges and gutters. W.W. Denslow (illustrator).

Plate facing page 80 lightly creased and with short edge tears (see photo), and plates facing pages 66 and 138 are likely re-attached; all other plates are very good to fine. Inner hinges are visible, as usual, but holding well. Neat owner name and year on ffep. A very good copy. Bienvenue & Schmidt, pp. 4-6. W. W. Denslow (illustrator).
